Pleasantville, N.Y. (April 12) -- On Saturday afternoon, the Saint Anselm softball team earned a split with Pace University in Northeast-10 play. The Hawks took game one by a 2-0 final before dropping a 3-2 game in the second half of the twinbill.

In game one, the two teams remained scoreless until the fifth inning when Brittney Birch (Bradford, Mass.) reached base on a single to left field and came home on a double to center by junior Katherine Theodorou (Glen Cove, N.Y.) for the 1-0 lead. Freshman pinch runner Krista Merrill (Portland, Maine) advanced to third on a wild pitch and came home on another wild pitch in the seventh inning to account for the 2-0 final. Sophomore pitcher Katie Corey (Weymouth, Mass.) gave up five hits in seven innings of work to pick up the win.

In the second game, the Setters took a 2-0 advantage in the bottom of the first before the Hawks answered back with a single run in the sixth inning. Birch came home on an error by Jaclyn Giannino (Beverly, Mass.) as the visitors looked for the series sweep. Pace added another run in the sixth for a 3-1 advantage before freshman Liz LeBrun (Rowley, Mass.) hit a homer to left field in the top of the seventh to get the Hawks within one at 3-2 with one out in the inning. Megan Lemire (Worcester, Mass.) took the loss for the Hawks, giving up three runs, including just one earned, in six innings of play.

With the split, the Hawks now sit at 9-9 overall and 3-5 in Northeast-10 Conference play. Saint Anselm is back in action on Sunday afternoon as the Hawks take on Assumption in Worcester.
