Hawks Sweep Past Purple Knights

Colchester, Vt. (April 16) -- The Saint Anselm softball team moved into sole possession of sixth place in the Northeast-10 standings with a sweep of Saint Michael's on Wednesday afternoon in Colchester, Vt. The Hawks took game one by a 4-2 final before picking up a 5-0 shutout in game two.

In game one, the Hawks got on the board in the top of the second on an RBI single by Megan Lemire (Worcester, Mass.) that scored Jackie Giannino (Beverly, Mass.). Giannino led off the inning with a double to set up the scoring chance. After a home run by junior Brittney Birch (Bradford, Mass.) in the third made the score 2-0, a triple from Katherine Theodorou (Glen Cove, N.Y.) in the fifth scored Moira McCabe (Brookline, N.H.) for the 3-0 lead. The Hawks added an insurance run in the top of the seventh on an RBI triple by Lemire that scored Giannino. Saint Michael's scored twice in the bottom of the seventh, but Lemire worked her way out of a jam to pick up the win. Lemire scattered four hits over seven innings with two strikeouts and one walk. Kelly Egan took the loss for the Purple Knights. Birch led the Hawks with three hits in the game, while Theodorou had a pair and Lemire had two hits and two RBI.

In game two, RBI hits in the first by Theodorou, Liz LeBrun (Rowley, Mass.) and Lemire gave the Hawks an early 3-0 lead. Giannino doubled in LeBrun in the third for the 4-0 lead and Giannino eventually came home on an error to account for the 5-0 final. Saint Anselm pitcher Katie Corey (Weymouth, Mass.) pitched a five-hit gem, going seven innings with four strikeouts and a pair of walks. Megan O'Connor took the loss for the Purple Knights as she gave up nine hits and five runs with two strikeouts and one walk.

With the sweep, the Hawks now stand are 14-10 overall and 8-6 in the Northeast-10, while Saint Michael's falls to 7-14 overall and 1-11 in the league. Saint Anselm is back in action on Thursday afternoon as the Hawks host Stonehill for a league doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m.
