Colchester, Vt. (March 21) -- On Wednesday afternoon in Vermont, the Saint Anselm men's lacrosse team opened its Northeast-10 Conference schedule with a 10-8 loss to Saint Michael's. Both teams had to contend with wind chills that dipped down into the teens throughout the game. With the win, the Purple Knights retain the Saints Trophy, which is a handcrafted, stained-glass lacrosse stick.
The two teams battled to a 2-2 tie after the first quarter before a strong showing in the second sent the Hawks into halftime with a 5-3 advantage. The Purple Knights answered back with authority though in the third period and used a four-goal outburst to tie the game at 7-7 heading into the final quarter. Saint Michael's kept up the offensive pressure in the fourth though and came away with the 10-8 victory.
Sophomore Chris Murphy (Winchester, Mass.) and James Morin (Winchester, Mass.) each posted two goals to lead the Hawks' offense
Saint Anselm goalkeeper Andrew Roy (Westford, Mass.) turned aside 11 shots in the loss.
With the loss, the Hawks fall to 2-3 overall and are now 0-1 in the Northeast-10. Saint Anselm is back in action on Saturday, March 24th as the team travels to Bentley for a Northeast-10 contest beginning at 1 p.m. in Waltham, Mass.
