Manchester, N.H. (April 17) -- On Tuesday evening, the Saint Anselm men's lacrosse team defeated Southern New Hampshire by a 15-13 final in a game moved from Saint Anselm's Grappone Stadium due to unplayable field conditions.
SNHU jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead with 7:15 remaining in the first quarter before the Hawks erupted for five unanswered goals so seize a 5-3 advantage with 11:51 left in the second quarter. SNHU's Sean Ball tied the game at 5-5 with 10:14 left in the quarter on a man-up goal before Matt Surette (Wakefield, Mass.) put the Hawks in front yet again. The two teams battled back and forth throughout the remainder of the first half before Steve Trocki (Braintree, Mass.) scored with just 13 seconds left to give the Hawks a 7-6 lead heading into the halftime break.
In the second half, Trocki scored just 1:01 into the period to push the lead to 8-6 before a 3-0 SNHU run gave the hosts their final lead at 9-8 with 6:35 left in the third quarter. The last five minutes of the third quarter proved to be the clincher for Saint Anselm as the Hawks tallied four times to take a 12-9 lead heading into the final quarter.
Southern New Hampshire pulled within one at 13-12 with 6:37 remaining before another Trocki goal and a score by freshman Matt O'Connell (Charlestown, Mass.) sealed the win for the Hawks.
Surette led the Hawks with four goals, while Trocki added a hat trick of his own. O'Connell also found the back of the net once and added a team-high four assists. Joe Young led the way for SNHU with four goals as eight different players scored for the Penmen.
Andrew Roy (Westford, Mass.) turned aside 13 shots for his second-straight win for the Hawks, while SNHU goalies Greg Palladino and Mickey Hover combined for 11 saves.
With the win, Saint Anselm improves to 4-6 overall and 2-4 in the Northeast-10, while SNHU drops to 3-7 overall and 3-3 in league play. The Hawks are back in action on Saturday, hosting Bryant for an NE-10 contest beginning at 3 p.m. at Grappone Stadium.
