22nd Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony
Slated For Saturday
Six Members, One Team To Be Honored By Saint Anselm Athletic Hall
of Fame
Manchester, N.H. (May 9, 200)-The 22nd annual Saint
Anselm Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony will induct six individuals
and one team on Saturday, May 10, after a vote by the Anselmian Athletic
Club was announced this week. The ceremony will begin at 5:00 PM in
Davison Hall and Prof. William Farrell will serve as the Master of
Ceremonies.
Four players, one coach, one team and one special recognition inductee
comprise this year's class. Men's basketball player Larry Golden,
'66 is the oldest player of this class. A three-year member of the
men's basketball team, Golden had outstanding sophomore and junior
seasons before having to sit out much of his senior campaign with
an injury. Playing before the advent of the 3-point shot, Golden scored
at least 34 points on three different occasions including a 37-point
game against Fairfield in 1965. He had career totals of 608 points
and 268 rebounds. His 15.6 points per game average is the 13th best
in school history.
Ice hockey player Ed King, '76 was a four-year player at the forward
position. Frank Harrington, former coach, stated that he "had
no better left wing during his time at Saint Anselm." King appeared
in 77 total games with career point totals of 44 goals and 44 assists
for 88 points... He stands 15th all-time in goals scored and 24th
in career points. His best season came as a senior when he notched
15 goals and 30 points. He was part of a Hawk squad that compiled
an overall record of 53-39-1.
Men's soccer player Steve O'Mara, '85 led the Hawks to three consecutive
(then-NE-8) Championships. Mara is among the top-honored players to
ever don a Saint Anselm uniform. He was a three-time all NE-8 First
Team selection, a two-time All NEISL First Team pick, and was also
named All New England First Team one as well as a two-time Saint Anselm
MVP. A Dean's List Student, he also was a Red Key Varsity Senior Student-Athlete
Award recipient.
Women's basketball player Kristin Skoglund, '96 is the youngest member
of the class. She Ranks 11th on the school's all-time points list
with 1,155. She averaged 10.7 points per game throughout her career
and recorded 259 assists (9th all-time) and 225 free throws (11th).
In all, Skoglund owns six of the school's top 21 single game scoring
marks. Not just a scorer however, Skoglund was a defensive genius,
recording 233 steals (4th all-time) and 91 blocks (3rd all-time).
Skoglund saved her best season for her senior campaign in which she
captained the team to a 16-11 record. In that year, she set school
records for points in a season (618) and points per game (22.9), while
recording 100 steals on the defensive end (2nd all-time). For her
efforts, Skoglund was named to the NE-10 first team, was named the
conference's Defensive Player of the Year, an ECAC First Team All-Star,
Daktronics All-New England, and was named both a Kodak and Daktronics
All-America. She also received the Anselmian Athletic Cub Female Athlete
of the Year Award. She played on teams that combined for an 85-38
record under Head Coach Donna Guimont.
The 1990-91 Women's Basketball team, under the direction of Coach
Guimont, will also be inducted. The squad put together the most wins
in program history, finishing with a 27-4 overall record and a 16-2
NE-10 regular season mark. They went on to win its first and only
NE-10 championship in program history with win over perennial power
Bentley. That season, the team earned a trip to NCAA Division II Tournament,
going as far as "Sweet 16." Captained by Monica McCarthy
and Kerri Lang, the team featured six all-conference players and two
All-Americans. Other team members were Janine Fronczek, Janette Czelusniak,
Monica Grehoski, Jody Reilly, Keley Fenney, Jennifer Ford, Kimberly
Mehlem, Kristin Sullivan, Nancy Rae, Kathleen Cassidy, Elizabeth Cranmer,
Rachel Nyberg, and Carolyn Reissfelder.
Fr. Jude Gray, O.S.B. will be inducted as a Special Recognition recipient.
A beloved member of the Saint Anselm community, Fr. Jude has served
the athletic department in a myriad of ways since coming to the Abbey
in 1962.A former professional baseball player with the Cleveland Indians
organization, Fr. Jude coached the baseball team in the early 1970's.
Fr. Jude's athletic knowledge goes beyond the baseball diamond, as
he has been a certified official in FIFA soccer, NCAA basketball,
and NCAA baseball. Although currently retired from the Monastery,
Fr. Jude still serves in the capacity of academic advisor for the
men's basketball team where he has guided our hoopsters since 1983.
The final inductee is current Men's Basketball Coach Keith Dickson,
who has been at the helm since the 1986 season. Last season Dickson
became the all-time winningest men's head coach in school history
with his 305th career win. Dickson has a career mark of 327-176 (.650),
which includes a 211-103 (.672) record in league play. His teams have
five NE-10 Tournament titles and two other regular season titles.
The Hawks have advanced to the NE-10 final four 13 times with a 5-3
record in the championship game, and have gone on to nine NCAA Tournament
appearances including an "Elite Eight" berth in the 1999-2000
season.
