Saint Anselm Wins Holiday Inn Shootout
Hawks Too Much For Lock Haven, 55-37

Boca Raton, Fla. (December 29, 2002)- Saint Anselm College erased an ugly start by dominating Lock Haven University in a 55-37 win over the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference members to win the Lynn University Holiday Inn Classic in Boca Raton, Fla.

Saint Anselm improves to 6-4 on the season and remains perfect in tournament play with a 4-0 mark. Lock Haven slips to 5-4 with the loss. The Hawks also remain perfect against PSAC teams with wins over LHU and Kutztown.

Neither team impressed in the first half with the Hawks finally limping into halftime with a 19-13 lead. Saint Anselm missed its first 11 shots and did not get on the board until the 14:40 mark on a mayup by Molly Dullea (Longmeadow, Mass./ Longmeadow). Fortunately for the Hawks, Lock Haven was equally as bad and held just a 7-4 lead with nine minutes remaining in the half.

From that point on, Saint Anselm freshmen Raenielle Decastro-Cain (Manchester, Conn./ Manchester) carried the Hawks by scoring 10 of the Hawks' next 12 points with the team building a 19-11 lead before Lock Haven scored right before the half. The marks were ugly with Saint Anselm shooting 27 percent and Lock Haven hitting on just 6 of 32 attempts (18 percent). Incredibly, 15 of the Hawk's 19 first half points came on fast break opportunities as the Hawk offense was able to outwork the LHU press defense.

Lock Haven never challenged in the second half as the Hawks eventually built a 23-point lead and cruised home to their second tournament title of the season. The Hawks woke up a bit in the second stanza and hit the nets to the tune of 47-percent and again held LHU to just six field goals, this time on 30 attempts (20-percent).

Decastro-Cain registered a career-high of 22 points to lead all scorers an earn a spot on the all- tournament team. She shot a blistering 11-for-16 from the floor and added three of the team's nine blocked shots. Briann Blanchard (Presque Isle, Maine/ Presque Isle) filled out her line with 10 points, six rebounds, seven assists and five steals to earn Tournament MVP honors following her 23-point erruption in Saturday's game against New Haven. Dullea also registered double figures in points with 10 to go along with six rebounds, and Sara Petrowicz (Grafton, Mass./ Holy Name) pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.

In all, the Hawks made just one of 16 shots from beyond the 3-point line but ran the fast break well, outscoring their counterparts 23-2 in the game. The Hawks finished the game with a 36-percent shooting mark while LHU shot just 19-percent.

Saint Anselm returns to action on Friday, January 3 when the Hawks host in-state rival Franklin Pierce in a 5:30 PM matchup.
