Stonehill Tops Saint Anselm Easton, Mass. (January 8, 2003)- Saint Anselm saw its four-game win streak come to a halt with a 71-59 loss to Stonehill College a Northeast-10 Conference game at Merket Gymnasium in Easton, Mass. Saint Anselm, which was playing without top player Sara Petrowicz (Grafton, Mass./ Holy Name) who went down with a knee injury in Sundays win at SNHU, drops to 8-5 overall, 4-5 in the NE-10. Stonehill improves to 9-2 on the season, 5-2 in league play. Stonehill led throughout most of the game; the Chieftains took a 45-28 lead into halftime thanks two several spurts including an early 9-0 run. The Chieftains took a 31-17 lead on a Kristen McDonnell (W. Roxbury, Mass./ Boston Latin) 3-pointer with 4:20 remaining in the opening half and extended the lead to 45-23 on a Bethany Roderigue (Winslow, Maine/ Winslow) triple before a late 5-0 Saint Anselm run cut into the lead. The Hawks held a dominating 10-5 advantage in offensive rebounds in the first half but had little to show for it with just 10 second chance points. Despite early foul trouble, Stonehill took it to the visitors inside with 18 points coming in the paint. The Chieftains also benfitted from a 54-percent mark from deep (7-for-13). McDonnell did most of the damage with 21 of her game-high 26 points coming in the first stanza. The Hawks used a stifling defense in the second half to get back into the game and came as close as 10 points, 69-59 but it was a case of too little, as the Chieftains held on for the win. The visitors outscored Stonehill 25-6 in points off turnovers but could not overcome the first half numbers. Brianna Blanchard (Presque Isle, Maine/ Presque Isle) led the Hawks with 15 points while Molly Dullea (Longmeadow, Mass./ Longmeadow) added 12. Katie Levane (Port Washington, N.Y./ Our Lady of Mercy) and Jen Carson (Townsend, Mass./ N. Middlesex) each chipped in with 10 points and eight boards.
