Saint Anselm Loses Lead, Wins Game

Manchester, N.H. (January 18, 2003)-The Saint Anselm College women's basketball team pulled out a victory in the waning moments against Le Moyne College after squandering a 10 point second half lead Saturday afternoon in a Northeast-10 game played in front of 643 fans at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.

The Hawks snapped a three game slide and improved their record to 9-7 overall and 5-7 in the NE-10, while the Dolphins extended their recent skid to five consecutive games, falling to 9-8 on the year and 6-6 in conference play.

Saint Anselm controlled the pace early in the game when a basket from freshman Raenielle Decastro-Cain (Manchester, Conn./ Manchester) gave the Hawks a 14-12 lead with 12:19 to play in the first half. The Decastro-Cain basket sparked a 14-6 run for Saint Anselm, putting the Hawks ahead by eight points, 28-18, with 5:45 left in the period. Le Moyne senior Shalyn Polinski (Oxford, Mass./ Oxford) hit a three-pointer with five seconds remaining in the half to cut the Hawks' lead to four, 30-26, at the intermission.

The Dolphins came out strong to start the second half with Polinski knocking down another three-point shot 13 seconds into the period, which triggered a 14-6 run by Le Moyne that gave the visitors their biggest lead of the game, 40-36, with 12:43 left to play. Saint Anselm then heated up and made an impressive 17-3 run of its own, capped off by a pair of baskets from freshman Lanna Martin (Calais, Maine/ Calais), to take the game's largest lead, 53-43, with five minutes remaining. As the Hawks' hot hand cooled off, the Dolphins staged a late charge with 11 unanswered points to seize a 54-53 lead with 36 seconds to play, but Saint Anselm senior Sara Petrowicz (Grafton, Mass./ Holy Name) came through in the clutch to put the Hawks ahead 55-54 with 12 seconds on the clock; a lead they would not relinquish.

Petrowicz-retuning to the starting lineup after a knee injury-was the only Saint Anselm player to score in double figures, getting 16 points on the afternoon. Junior Jen Carson (Townsend, Mass./ N. Middlesex) pulled down 10 rebounds in the win.

Polinski led the Dolphins with 13 points and senior Stacy Schrader (Fairport, N.Y./ Monroe CC) and junior Jennifer Feher (Depew, N.Y./ Depew) chipped in 12 points apiece.

Saint Anselm returns to the court on January 20th when the Hawks travel to Saint Michael's for a 5:30 tip-off.
