Saint Michael's Survives Saint Anselm
Cold First Half Sinks Hawks, 66-57

Colchester, Vt. (January 20, 2003)-The Saint Anselm College women's basketball team suffered a 66-57 setback at the hands of Saint Michael's College in Northeast-10 Conference action at the Ross Sports Center in Colchester, Vt.

A poor showing in the first half doomed the Hawks, who trailed by an many as 25 in the opening stanza and saw their 14-game winning streak against the Purple Knights come to an end as a result.

The Hawks, who are just 2-6 in road games this season, fall to 9-8 overall, 5-8 in league play. Saint Michael's improves to 10-6, 6-6 in NE-10 play with the win.

A strong second half showing was not enough with the 25-point hole proving to be too deep. The Hawks got as close as 11 points in the second half, 54-43, on a Raenielle Decastro-Cain (Manchester, Conn./ Manchester) steal and subsequent layup with 9:15 to go and again several times thereafter but would get no closer than that until 1:10 remaining on a Sara Petrowicz (Grafton, Mass./ Holy Name) putback that made the score 63-54.

With 30 seconds remaining, the Hawks made things interesting on a 3-pointer from Molly Dullea (Longmeadow, Mass./ Longmeadow) to make the score 63-57, but the Knights eventually won the game at the free throw line, making three of four attempts for the win.

The rout started early as the Knights hit from inside and out, to the tune of 57-percent overall. The Hawks were playing their second game without leading scorer Brianna Blanchard (Presque Isle, Maine/ Presque Isle) and could not keep pace. The Hawks suffered through a 10:21 drought in which they did not make a field goal. In that time, SMC expanded a 14-13 lead to 41-17 before a Jen Reddish (Weymouth, Mass./ Archbishop Williams) 3-pointer with 1:01 to play ended the run with the Knights taking a 41-22 lead into halftime.

Decastro-Cain and Lanna Martin (Calais, Maine/ Calais) led the Hawks with 17 and 15 points, respectively with Decastro-Cain putting together a 7-for-8 shooting night. The 15 points for Martin represent a career-high, and she also added five assists. The Knights were led by NE-10 leading scorer and rebounder Liz LeFebvre, who tallied 23 points and 15 assists.

Saint Anselm returns to action on Saturday when the Hawks travel to Springfield, Mass. for a 1:30 PM game at American International College. Saint Anselm won the year's first meeting by a score of 74-65 on December 7 in Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.
