Saint Anselm Falls Short Springfield, Mass. (January 25, 2003)-American International College held off visiting Saint Anselm College71-64 in a Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball game at Butova Gymnasium Saturday. American International, which is on a season-long four-game winning streak, improves to 11-8 overall, 7-7 in the NE-10. Saint Anselm, which has lost five of its last six, dips to 9-9 overall, 5-9 in league play. The Yellow Jackets shot 46-percent from the floor to overcome a lopsided 52-30 Saint Anselm rebounding advantage. The Hawks dominated the glass from the start and pulled down 27 offensive rebounds but were undone by a 37- percent shooting mark from the floor and 55-percent mark from the free throw line. A 19-7 AIC run spanning the halves opened up a back and forth game to give the Yellow Jackets their largest lead at 49-40 with 13:00 to play. Trailing by eight, 57-49 with 7:40 to play, Saint Anselm cut the lead to three but, unable to capitalize in their second chance opportunities, the Hawks would get no closer as AIC shut the door with free throws down the stretch. The teams went into halftime deadlocked at 33-33 after a furious first half that saw six ties and three lead changes. The Hawks dominated the boards to the tune of 25-14, including 13 on the offensive glass but had little to show for it as the Yellow Jackets shot 45-percent from the floor (13-for-29). AIC was led by Sharmion Selman's (Burlington, Vt.) 21 points on 9-for-12 shooting. The Jackets also received 12 points apiece from Anna Lashway (Guilford, Vt.) and Tina Teixeira (Staten Island, N.Y.). The Hawks were led by Raenielle Decastro-Cain's (Manchester, Conn./ Manchester) 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Sara Petrowicz (Grafton, Mass./Holy Name) added 16 points and six boards. AIC returns to action on Wednesday when the Yellow
Jackets travel to Syracuse, N.Y. to play Le Moyne. Saint Anselm
also returns to the hardwood Wednesday when the Hawks host Bryant.
