Hawks Fall Short At Buzzer, 52-51
Saint Anselm Drops
Last Second Decision to Assumption
Manchester, N.H. (February 1, 2003)-The Saint Anselm
College women's basketball team came up short against Northeast-10
opponent Assumption College, 52-51, Saturday afternoon at Stoutenburgh
Gymnasium.
Unable to avenge an earlier loss to the Greyhounds, Saint Anselm
dropped to 10-10 on the season and 6-10 against the NE-10. Assumption
evened its record at 10-10, as well, with the win and climbed to
6-10 in the conference-putting the Greyhounds ahead of the Hawks
by virtue of a season sweep.
A slow, yet controlled, first half saw 10 lead changes and four
ties with the largest lead at any given point being merely three
points. Junior Jen
Carson (Townsend, Mass./ Townsend) was a force under the glass
for the Hawks in the initial period as she pulled down eight of
her game-high 11 boards before the intermission. Greyhounds' junior
Katelyn Dwyer (Wakefield, Mass./ Wakefield) cut the Saint Anselm
lead to 23-22 with 1:39 to play in the half, and subsequently intercepted
a pass from Hawks' junior Molly
Dullea (Longmeadow, Mass./ Longmeadow) and took it the length
of the court to give the visitors a 24-23 advantage at the break.
Assumption took advantage of the momentum and quickly expanded its
lead to 31-23 with an 8-0 run to start the second half. Saint Anselm
would battle back behind a strong second half from freshman Lanna
Martin (Calais, Maine/ Calais), who netted eight of her 11 points
in the second stanza. With less than five seconds remaining in the
game, and the Hawks trailing 52-49, Martin collected her own deflected
inbound pass, but was just off the mark from 40 feet away. Dullea
gathered the rebound and converted for two at the buzzer, and with
no impending foul the game ended 52-51 in favor of the Greyhounds.
Saint Anselm was led by 12 points from junior Brianna
Blanchard (Presque Isle, Maine/ Presque Isle). Senior Sara
Petrowicz (Grafton, Mass./ Holy Name) chipped in with 10 points
in addition to the 11 from Martin.
Dwyer led all scorers with 18 points and junior Michelle Towne (E.
Taunton, Mass./ Taunton) had 12 for the Greyhounds.
Saint Anselm returns to the court February 5th, when the Hawks travel
to New Haven, Conn. to face the Owls of Southern Connecticut State
in a game slated to begin at 5:30.
