Saint Anselm Suffers First Setback
Hawks Cold From Floor; Morrissey Leads Greyhounds

Worcester, Mass. (December 1, 2002)-The Saint Anselm College women's basketball team lost for the first time this season with a 71-59 defeat at the hands of Assumption College in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup in Worcester, Mass. Sunday.

Poor long-range shooting and untimely turnovers were the story as Saint Anselm shot just 1-for-14 from beyond the arc (7 percent) and committed 21 turnovers. Assumption didn't take of the ball either, committing 28 turnovers but did shoot well from the floor, led by Meghan Morrissey's (Waterville, N.Y.) 24 points on 6-for-8 shooting from deep.

The first half featured inconsistent play by both teams with a total of 26 turnovers (12 by Saint Anselm). Trailing by 10 points, 31-21, with four minutes to play, the Hawks finished the half on a 9-0 run to cut the Greyhounds' lead to 31-30 at the intermission.

The Greyhounds were aided by a 75 percent shooting percentage from 3-point range in the first half, going 6-for-8 from beyond the arc. The Hounds started the second stanza in similar fashion, hitting on three of four from long range to start in building a 45-34 lead at the 14:03 mark. The Hounds finished the game with a 67 percent mark from deep (10-for-15).

The Hawks cut into the lead with a suffocating full court press and cut the lead to five, 45-40 before Morrissey struck with her sixth trey of the game. The two teams traded baskets for the next six minutes before the home team pulled away.

The Assumption duo of Margaret Liljedahl (Mattapoisett, Mass.) and Meghan Sullivan (Athol, Mass.) contributed 15 points apiece with Liljedahl adding seven assists (six turnovers).

The Hawks had four players in double figures and were led by Sara Petrowicz's (Grafton, Mass./ Holy Name) 13. Raenielle Decastro-Cain (Manchester, Conn./ Manchester), Lanna Martin (Calais, Maine/ Calais), and Jen Carson (Townsend, Mass./ N. Middlesex) also placed in double figures with Carson adding four steals.
