Saint Anselm Drops Second Straight In NE-10
Southern Conn. St. Improves To 8-1 With 78-68 Win

New Haven, Conn. (December 21, 2002)-The Saint Anselm College women's basketball team suffered its second consecutive Northeast-10 Conference loss Saturday evening, 78-68 at Southern Connecticut State in New Haven, Conn.

The loss drops Saint Anselm to 4-4 overall, 2-4 in NE-10 play while SCSU improves to 8-1 overall, 4-1 in league play.

Trailing by double digits in the second half, Saint Anselm made a run and cut the Southern lead to four, 53-49, on a 3-point play by Sara Petrowicz (Grafton, Mass./ Holy Name) with 10:28 to play. An SCSU timeout stopped the momentum and the Owls immediately rebuilt a nine point lead.

The Hawks came back again behind the ability of its press defense and cut the lead to 62-61 with 5:07 to play on a pair of baskets in the paint by Jen Carson (Townsend, Mass./ N. Middlsex). The Owls again called a timeout and got a big boost when Carson fouled out with 4:09 on the clock and the home team clinging to a 64-61 lead. Carson had tied a career-high with 16 points, equaling her total against the Owls last year.

Kim Jackle (Vernon, Conn.) nailed a 3-pointer at the 2:52 mark to put her Owls ahead by five, 68-63. The Hawks were unable to convert on their next three possessions and were forced to to foul the rest of the way. SCSU made eight of nine free throws down the stretch to win going away.

Jackle led the way offensively for SCSU with 20 points and nine assists. The Hawks were led by the 17 points and eight rebounds of Petrowicz while Raenielle Decastro-Cain (Manchester, Conn./ Manchester) had a homecoming of sorts and played well with her second straight double-double, scoring 14 points and pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds.

Saint Anselm started the game off hot, draining eight of its first 10 shots including a trio of 3-pointers, two of which came from Jen Reddish (Weymouth, Mass./ Archbishop Williams) as they jumped out to a 19-12 lead. Southern also shot well however and came out on top in the opening session after finishing the half on a decisive 27- 13 run, capped by a driving layup by Jessica Kolakowski (Wolcott, Conn.).

Reddish paced the Hawks in the first half with 10 points on 4-for-6 shooting while the Owls were led by Jackle's 10 points and five assists.

Saint Anselm returns to action on December 28 when the Hawks tip off in the Lynn University Holiday Inn Classic in Boca Raton, Fla.
