Head Women's Coach: Bill Vermette
Assistant Coaches: Melissa Pfefferle, Larry Jones, Tracy Pomerenke

Head Coach Bill Vermette

Now entering his seventh season as the head coach of the women's basketball team, it becomes clear that Bill Vermette's experience goes far beyond the past six years at the helm. Coach Vermette’s dedication to the success of the women’s basketball program is incomparable; he remains, to this day, the pilar of the Saint Anselm community that he has been since his arrival.

Vermette got his start at Saint Anselm in the 1986-87 season. He came aboard that year to serve as the program's top assistant coach and was the right hand man to Saint Anselm coaching legend Donna Guimont. He remained in that role, learning and cultivating the program into one of the most successful women’s basketball teams in the nation, for 10 seasons.

During his 10 years as assistant, Vermette was instrumental to the success that earned Saint Anselm a reputation as not just a conference contender, but a regional and national power. Indeed, no one at Saint Anselm possesses the combination of an eye for detail coupled with vehement motivation in the same capacity as Vermette.

Overall, Vermette is entering his 17th season on the Hilltop. In 1996-97, Vermette was given the opportunity to come into his own when Guimont retired after 22 years as head coach. That first season was a decidedly smooth transition, and the team responded with its continued success. Saint Anselm earned yet another 20-victory season and another appearance in the prestigious NCAA National Division II Tournament.

His six-year tenure as head coach has produced an overall record of 101 - 69 and a
69 - 49 mark in NE-10 Conference play. That six-year span includes two NCAA tournament appearances, three Northeast-10 “Final Four” appearances and the Northeast-10 runner up in 1999; the first NE-10 championship game appearance for the program since 1995. His program is also accustomed to a success level that has allowed just two losing seasons in his 17-year association and has never missed post-season play.

Much of Saint Anselm's success over the years is attributed to his hard work and devotion to the program.

Vermette possesses a vast amount of basketball coaching experience that carries over to practice and game preparation. Considered a superb bench coach, and basketball perfectionist, he has developed a reputation for exploiting opponents’ weaknesses while never ceasing to analyzie the performance of his own team.

A native of Nashua, N.H, Vermette honed his skills coaching Mount Saint Mary High School of Nashua, N.H.; a program he led to the NHIAA final four twice in three years. Vermette, who also served as director of athletics at Mount Saint Mary's, guided the team to an overall record of 53-42 during his tenure. Previously, Vermette coached Presentation of Mary Academy of Hudson, N.H., to a 21-18 record over three seasons.

Vermette's coaching talents and bond with Saint Anselm athletics has extended well beyond just the basketball court. He also served for 10 years as head coach of the Saint Anselm softball program, where he led the program from being one of the lowest finishing teams in the region to becoming one of the best in New England.

The Hawks became an NE-10 title contender, ECAC Division II champion and NCAA contender as well as garnered 161 victories, making him the winningest coach in program history.

A 1970 graduate of Central Connecticut State University, Vermette resides in Hooksett, N.H., with his wife, Robin.

Assistant Coach Melissa Pfefferle
Assistant Coach Meliss Pfefferle:
Melissa Pfefferle enters her seventh season on the Hawks bench as the top assistant coach.

Pfefferle graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1988 where she was a four year letter winner, two time captain and standout of the women’s basketball team.

Pfefferle came to Saint Anselm after gaining experience in assistant coaching positions for both the Portsmouth, N.H., and Winnisquam, N.H., Regional High School Girls basketball teams.

Pfefferle's adjustment to the collegiate coaching ranks left no doubt that her transition into Saint Anselm’s tradition of success would be easy. Coach Pfefferle has been, according to Coach Bill Vermette, instrumental to the success of the women's program since she joined the staff. During her time, the Hawks have qualified for three NE-10 “Final Fours” and two NCAA national tournaments.
Originally from Little York, N.J., Pfefferle also remained in close interaction with the community. Prior to her full-time employment at Saint Anselm, Pfefferle served as a Program Manager of the Easter Seals Society of Nashua, N.H., and has served various roles in youth centers and elementary schools in both teaching and coaching roles.

Pfefferle recently agreed to resume the role of head softball coach at Saint Anselm. In her previous tenure from 1999-2001, she guided the Hawks to a 72-49-2 mark, which led to two NE-10 playoff berths and back-to-back appearances in the ECAC Division II championship series. Her efforts also earned her Northeast-10 “Coach of the Year” honors in 1999.

She resides in Goffstown, N.H.

Assistant Coach Larry Jones
Assistant Coach Larry Jones:
Larry Jones enters his 15th season as an assistant coach, serving key roles for the Hawk's program by helping the coaching staff in both game and practice situations.

He is responsible for much of the team's scouting of opponents and the recruiting of prospective student-athletes.

Coach Jones and Head Coach Bill Vermette have been a team for more than a dozen years. Along with his tenure at Saint Anselm, he also assisted Vermette at both Mount Saint Mary Academy and Presentation of Mary Academy when Vermette served as head coach at the two New Hampshire high schools.

A native of New Jersey, Jones played his schoolboy basketball for legendary NBA coach Hubie Brown.

Jones is a successful sales representative, residing in Merrimack, N.H.

Assistant Coach Tracy Pomerenke
Assistant Coach Tracy Pomerenke:
Tracy Pomerenke enters her fifth season as an assistant coach with the women’s program at Saint Anselm.

Pomerenke graduated from Bentley College in 1997 and was no stranger to the Saint Anselm program, having experienced first hand the intense level of women’s basketball in the Northeast-10 as a five year letter winner with the Falcons.

Pomerenke’s five years at Bentley included a wealth of successes. Pomerenke was part of a Bentley program that recorded five trips to the NCAA Division II national tournament including two trips to the NCAA Final Four.

She was a standout guard for the Falcons over her career, retiring with 1,099 career points, one of just 16 Bentley players to achieve the 1,000-point mark. She also recorded a career average of 8.4 points per game.

Pomerenke stands fifth in all time three point field goals in program history.

Prior to coming to Saint Anselm, Pomerenke served as the assistant coach of both basketball and volleyball at Emmanuel College in Boston, working closely in scouting and recruiting.
Originally from Bristol, Conn., Pomerenke also serves as a science teacher at McKinley Vocational High School in Boston.

She resides in Waltham, Mass.
