Trayers Sets Freshman Mark, Hawks Roll

New Haven, Conn. (April 28, 2003)-Freshman Jacquelyn Trayers (Sandwich, Mass./ Sandwich) netted five goals and dished out an assist in a, 15-6, Northeast-10 victory for the Hawks at Southern Conn. St. Trayers finishes the season with 32 points (27 G, 5A), which is the highest single-season total for a freshman in the team's history.

Saint Anselm finished the 2003 season with a 4-9 overall record and a 3-6 mark in NE-10 play while the Owls fell to 1-10 for the year and 0-9 in the conference.

Trayers record for points by a first-year player topped the previous mark of 30 set in 2000 by current senior-and the Hawks' all-time leading scorer-Katelynn O'Connell (Sandwich, Mass./ Sandwich). Not to be outdone, O'Connell also registered five goals with an assists, including the first three scores of the game, which helped propel the Hawks to an 8-1 advantage before the intermission.

Into the second half with Saint Anselm holding a comfortable 10-2 lead, the Owls attempted to come back with three unanswered goals until the Hawks smothered any hope of an SCSU win by outscoring the hosts, 5-1 in the final 14:29 to secure the victory.

Cathy Cardini (Willington, Conn.) led Southern Connecticut offensively with four goals and no assists.

Sophomore goalkeeper Karen Spellman (Woburn, Mass./ Arlington Catholic) ended the day with six saves and only six goals against while SCSU netminder Sara Dube (Northampton, Mass.) concluded the afternoon with 17 saves.
