Saint Anselm Falls To 0-2 After Saint Mary's
Loss
Saint Mary's City, Md. (March 7, 2003)-The Saint Anselm
women's lacrosse team dropped its second match of the season, 19-2,
to Saint Mary's College of Maryland on Friday afternoon to complete
the team's two-game, season-opening, trip to the mid-Atlantic.
Saint Mary's-the fifth-ranked team in the NCAA Div. III-improved
to 4-0 with the win, while Saint Anselm fell to 0-2 for the fourth
consecutive year.
The Seahawks scored 10 unanswered goals in the first 17 minutes
of play with sophomore Karli Libertini (Baltimore, Md./ Catonsville)
registering two goals and three assists in the run to lead the charge.
Saint Anselm senior Meg Shea (Rochester, N.Y./ Mercy) tallied
the first goal for the visitors with 11:57 to play before halftime
and sophomore Ally Maslowski (Billerica, Mass./ Billerica)
also netted a score for the Hawks before the break, but Saint Mary's
would hold a firm 13-2 advantage at the intermission.
Saint Mary's would add six goals in the second half, including three
goals and an assist from Libertini, to end the game at 19-2.
Sophomore goalkeeper Karen Spellman (Woburn, Mass./ Arlington
Catholic) played all 60 minutes in the cage for Saint Anselm and
made eight saves. Her counterpart, sophomore Jen Chumley (Bel Air,
Md./ Bel Air), allowed both Hawks' goals and made four saves in
44:24 minutes before being relieved by freshman Holly Stone (Germantown,
Md./ Poolsville) who made three saves in the remaining 15:36.
Saint Anselm is now off until March 22nd when the Hawks will host
Stonehill for a 1:00 game.
