Saint Anselm Comes From Behind For 6-4 Victory

Freshman Jackie Trayers scored three goals and dished out an assist against NEC on Friday for her second straight hat trick.

Henniker, N.H. (March 28, 2003)-The Saint Anselm women's lacrosse team earned its first win of the season with a thrilling 6-4, come-from-behind, overtime victory against in-state non-conference opponent New England College Friday afternoon.

The Hawks moved to 1-3 overall following the win, while NEC dropped to 0-3 on the year.

The Pilgrims took a 1-0 lead early in the first half when junior Samantha Webb (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) scored just 4:05 into the game, but the Hawks answered right back with a goal from freshman Kristen Conlon (Milton, Mass./ Milton) at 5:45. Webb added two more goals in the period to give NEC its biggest lead of the game, 3-1, 15:17 into the period before Saint Anselm freshman Jacquelyn Trayers (Sandwich, Mass./ Sandwich) cut the gap to 3-2 with a goal at 17:03 to close out scoring for the first half.

New England started fast in the second half as well when Webb put the Pilgrims up 4-2 36:51 into the contest. Saint Anselm cut the lead to 4-3 when Conlon netted her second score at 40:43. The teams would battle to a stalemate until senior Katelynn O'Connell (Sandwich, Mass./ Sandwich) tallied the game-tying goal at 58:22.

A two-minute penalty to NEC star freshman goaltender Laura Bishop (Brunswick, Maine) with seconds remaining gave the Hawks the opportunity they needed as Trayers took advantage and netted a pair of overtime goals-one against backup goaltender Kaitlin Kellogg (Londonderry, N.H.) and one on an empty net during the NEC goaltender transition-to give Saint Anselm a 6-4 lead it would not relinquish.

Sophomore goalkeeper Karen Spellman (Woburn, Mass./ Arlington Catholic) played all 66 minutes in the cage for Saint Anselm and made eight saves to earn her first win of the year. Bishop made 18 stops in net for the Pilgrim, but Kellogg took the loss by giving up the first overtime goal while making a single save.

Saint Anselm takes the field at home for the first time this season on Monday when the Hawks welcome Franklin Pierce to Manchester for a 4:00 draw in a game originally slated to be played at FPC but was changed due to field conditions.
