Easton, Mass. (April 6, 2003)-Saint Anselm lost its third Northeast-10
women's lacrosse match in as many tries this season as Stonehill
ran away with a convincing 28-1 victory today at Chieftains Stadium.
The loss dropped Saint Anselm to 1-5 overall and 0-3 against NE-10
opponents while the No. 8 Chieftains improved to 6-2 on the season
and 5-0 in league play following their sixth consecutive win.
Stonehill opened up the game with a 12-0 run before freshman Jacquelyn
Trayers (Sandwich, Mass./ Sandwich) netted the lone Hawks'
goal with 7:50 remaining before halftime. From that point on,
it was all Stonehill as senior Melissa Gross (Bow, N.H.) powered
the Chieftains to a 15-1 halftime lead with six goals and three
assists in the initial period.
The hosts continued to pour on the offense in the latter stanza
with 11 unanswered goals in the second half to secure the 26-1
victory. Gross finished with a pair of Stonehill records for goals
and total points in a game with nine and 13, respectively. Chieftains'
senior Katie Lambert (Milton, Mass.) became the sixth player in
NCAA Division II history to reach the 200 career goal plateau
with five scores on the afternoon.
Junior Karen Spellman made a season-high
11 saves against the Chieftains.

Hawks' junior goalkeeper Karen Spellman (Woburn, Mass./
Arlington Catholic) endured the barrage of 55 shots by Stonehill
and turned in one of her better performances of the year with
a season-high 11 saves in the loss. Spellman's counterpart, senior
Carissa Medeiros (New Bedford, Mass.) made two saves in 47 minutes
of play for the win before being replaced by freshman Lauren Stone
(Slingerlands, N.Y.) who was untested in the final 13 minutes
of the contest.
Saint Anselm must regroup quickly as the Hawks travel to Colchester,
Vt. to take on Saint Michael's in an NE-10 game scheduled for
a 3:30 PM start.
