West Haven, Conn. (April 17, 2003)-The Saint Anselm
women's lacrosse team tied a team record with its eighth loss of
the season by falling, 9-8, in overtime to New Haven University
in a non-conference game Thursday afternoon.
The Hawks plummeted to 1-8 on the season whereas the Chargers improved
to 6-4 overall.
Freshman Jacquelyn Trayers (Sandwich, Mass./ Sandwich) registered
a pair of goals in the first half, the latter of which put the Hawks
ahead 5-3 with 5:21 remaining until halftime.
The Saint Anselm defense could not hold down the Chargers, though,
as sophomore Eileen Perchinski (Hicksville, N.Y.) brought the hosts
to within one, 5-4, with 2:32 remaining in the initial period. Casandra
Schmidt (New Milford, Conn.) then tied the game at five goals apiece
with just 23 seconds until the intermission.
After falling behind 8-7 midway through the second half, senior
Katelynn O'Connell (Sandwich, Mass./ Sandwich)-who scored
a goal to send the Hawks into overtime in their lone win this season-once
again came through with late-game heroics, scoring her third goal
of the contest, to tie the game at 8-8 with 46 seconds left to force
the extra frame.
Unfortunately, Saint Anselm would not emerge victorious this time
around as Chargers' freshman Brittany Tregear (Victoria, British
Colombia) netted the only score of the overtime period with 2:23
remaining.
Sophomore goalkeeper Karen Spellman (Woburn, Mass./ Arlington
Catholic) played all 66 minutes in the cage for Saint Anselm and
made eight saves in the loss. Spellman's counterpart, Heather Gebhardt
(E. Rochester, N.Y.), stopped 16 shots earning the victory.
The Hawks return to the field on Monday when they host NE-10 opponent
American International in a 2:00 PM game.
