The Gleason Brown Faculty Jazz Group

Take the Q Train (and other lesser-known Ellington tunes)

No, there really isn't a 'Take the Q Train' in the Ellington compositional repertoire, but too often musical programs featuring the jazz master's works privilege almost exclusively tunes like 'Satin Doll,' 'I Got it Bad and That Ain't Good,' 'Sophisticated Lady,' 'Do Nothing 'Till You Hear From Me,' 'Mood Indigo' and, of course, 'Take the A Train.' Brilliant and enduring as these charts are, they are only partially representative of The Duke's creative range. With gratitude for their assistance to Jazz Department Chair Dave Seiler and to the Music Archives staff at The University of New Hampshire Library, the Gleason-Brown Jazz Group presents an evening of Ellington's lesser-known music – ballads, swing, Latin and be-bop – the quality of which serves only to reinforce the assessment that Ellington's achievement is without qualification or limitation. Faculty musicians Monte Brown (bass), Ed Gleason (sax), and Ann Norton (vocals) will be joined by some of the region's finest 'side-persons' to present an October evening of melodies from America's true jazz genius
