Thesis Project
You must do a thesis on two fo the three sections of the class, one philosophical, scientific, or political and one literary. Papers due Friday of the thesis week. Appointments should be scheduled no later than the Friday of the week preceding thesis week.
You are to choose a problem or issue, either philosophical or interpretative, related to a work or works we have read and formulate a thesis on this issue and defend it against the opposing position.
Paper form: (Length Limit 2000 words, about 8 pages)
A. Introduction: Explain the problem or issue by:
1. State the assumptions for the position you agree with
2. State the assumptions for the position you disagree with.
3. State the basic argument(s) for the assumptions of the side you agree with.
4. State the basic argument(s) for the assumptions of the side you disagree with.
5. State your thesis and explain your central reason for thinking the arguments on your side to be stronger.
B. Body of Essay:
1 Give the best argument you can think of for your position.
2 Raise the best objection to this argument that the opposing position might raise.
3 Respond to the objection.
These steps may be repeated as many times as space and time allow.
C. Conclusion: Summarize your central argument and mention any special significance you think your conclusion might have.
Oral Presentation form:
A. Thesis Presentation: Explain the problem or issue by:

B. Initial defense: Give the best argument you can think of for your position.
A and B should take no more than 15 minutes.
C. Defense and examination: I will raise the objections to your thesis and you will have an opportunity to answer them.
