There will be two exams covering materials for the first and second thirds of the course. The Final Exam will be comprehensive but will concentrate on materials covered after the second exam (approximately 70% - 80% of the exam questions). Each in-class lecture exam will include a take-home portion. The take-home portion is open book but students are not allowed to collaborate on these exercises. Homework problems will be handed out towards the end of each topic and will be due one week later at the beginning of class. They will simulate real biological problems and data. An assignment not handed in on time will be penalized 10% of its value each day it is late. All homework assignments must be stapled or they will not be accepted!!!! All papers must be turned in person at the beginning of class one week after they have been given out. I will not accept papers turned into the secretary or through the mail. It is the responsibility of each student to keep for their own records every graded assignment, quiz, exam or other materials that are returned them.

Written Presentation
The written presentation is a summary of how statistics were used in an article from the scientific literature. Students will be assigned a statistic and they must find a paper in the literature where authors used the statistic. The written paper should be about 2 pages maximum in length. The summary must include the following:
1) Full citation of the paper and a separate photocopy of the first page of the research article
2) Research question raised by the authors
3) Subject species and type of data used in the paper
4) Statistical hypotheses and statistics used in the paper
5) Summary of the results and how the statistics were used to answer the research question
Beginning in spring 2002, every student must turn in marked up first draft they wrote along with the final draft of the paper. A marked up draft is a marked up version of the paper with red ink makring mistakes, areas needing corrections and revisions, etc.. This is evidence that the student has carefully gone over the paper, identified problem areas and made substantive revisions. It is to ensure that each student is taking the time to write at least one draft, review it and work towards a final draft of their paper.
Web Site Challenge
Are you cool enough to take on the Web Site Challenge? I am trying to add news sites and resources to my WWW Home Page for my students and colleagues. I am enlisting your help through the Web Site Challenge. One extra credit point will be awarded to each student who searches the World Wide Web and find the best WWW site or sites with information on statistics, especially Biostatistics. Newsgroups, listservs, Usenet groups and similar discussion oriented sites are not acceptable. WWW Home pages are eligible. Submit all sites on diskette or through e-mail!
Attendance in lecture and laboratory is mandatory. I will take attendance often in lecture. Consult the Student Handbook for College policy on attendance. Students missing 3 or more lectures without a College approved excuse will be dismissed from the course. If a student misses an exam for which they have a College approved excuse, they will have to make it up on the last day of classes at 5:00 pm. Students must have a note from the Assistant Dean's office if they have missed an assignment due to illness! If there is a death in the family I must have a copy of the obituary or a note from the Assistant Dean's office (Dr. D. Bruce) to confirm the event. Failure to obtain a College approved excuse for missing an exam will result in a grade of zero for the missed exam grade. Refer to the Dean's policy here clarification.
Athletics and Attendance
Student athletes will occasionally encounter conflicts between games and their labs and lectures in this course. It is your responsibility to see Dr. Pitocchelli before the scheduling conflict between your game and lab or lecture and make the appropriate arrangements. Make sure that you check the possible labs you can make up so that you can attend your event. Every athlete must show this web page to their coaches so they are aware of this policy as well as the student. Remember that academic obligations always take precedence over athletics at Saint Anselm College.
I do not return phone mail messages! If you need to see me about schedule changes or anything else important pertaining to the course you must see me in person to convey these messages. I will always accept e-mail messages. Mail to jpitocch@anselm.edu.
Cell phones, beepers, pagers or other similar electronic devices are not allowed in the lecture or laboratory. They are a distraction to you, your fellow classmates and the instructor. Do not bring them into lecture or lab in this course. Failure to adhere to this policy will result in a 10 point penalty to the Final Grade (example, 80% becomes 70%) for each occurence during the semester.
