Field Trip: Coastal New Hampshire
Saturday, January 8, 9:00 a.m.
Join Hank Chary for a trip along our coastline. We expect loons
and ducks,
and perhaps we'll find larks, purple sandpipers, or even an owl.
Stops will
include the fisherman's wharf in Portsmouth, New Castle, Odiorne
Point, Rye
Harbor, and Hampton Beach. Dress warmly and bring a lunch for
this all-day
trip. Meet at the Massabesic Audubon Center parking lot.
Contact: Hank Chary at 437-2552.
Field Trip: Cape Ann Birding
Saturday, January 22
Let's explore a new area for winter birding. We'll begin at Magnolia
Point, then look for winter seabirds at a number of sites between there
and Halibut Point. This is an all-day trip, so bring a lunch and wear warm
clothing. We may also look for a chowder house at lunch if there is
interest. Meet trip leader Jane Hills (625-8332) at 8:00 a.m. behind the
Shell gas station at the East Side Plaza on Hanover Street in Manchester.
Snow cancels.
Field Trip: Plum Island
Saturday, February 5, 7:30 a.m.
Meet Dr. Jay Pitocchelli for a visit to one of New England's best
birding
spots. In addition to seeing overwintering ducks and seabirds, we
hope to
spot some owls. Entrance to the Parker River Wildlife Refuge is
$5.00 or a
current Duck Stamp or Golden Eagle Pass. Dress warmly and bring a
lunch for
this all-day trip. Meet at the Massabesic Audubon Center parking
lot.
Contact: Jay Pitocchelli at 641-7397.
Field Trip: Merrimack River
Sunday, February 20, 8:00 a.m.
Meet Jeff Nelson for this morning trip along the Merrimack River
from
Hooksett to Litchfield. We'll look for birds on the water and in
the air.
Hopefully, we'll see a Bald Eagle or two at their favorite
roosts. We'll
also watch for Peregrine Falcons. Meet in the upper parking lot
of the
Amoskeag Fishways on Fletcher Street in Manchester (Amoskeag
Bridge, Exit 6
off Rt. 293, behind the hotel). Trip should finish by noon.
Contact: Jeff Nelson at 472-5235.
Field Trip: Birding the Maine Coast
Saturday, February 26, 8:00 a.m.
Winter is a great time to venture out to the coast to see the sea
ducks that
spend their summers in the far north. Harlequin Ducks in their
splendid
plumage are a real find, and we usually locate some on this trip.
We'll
start at the Marginal Way in Ogunquit and work our way down the
coast to
Portsmouth. Dress warmly and bring a lunch for this all-day trip.
Meet at
the East Side Plaza (just behind the Shell Station) on Hanover
Street in
Manchester.
Contact: Jane Hills at 625-8332
Field Trip: Along the New Hampshire Coast
Sunday, March 5
Along the New Hampshire Coast
Join Drew Trested (382-6736) for a trip to his favorite birding spots
along our coastline to see what we can find. Dress warmly and bring a
lunch for this all-day trip. Meet at the Massabesic Audubon Center parking
lot at 8:30 a.m.
Field Trip: Great Bay
Saturday, March 25
Join Hank Chary (437-2552) for a trip to Great Bay, a haven for large
numbers of wintering geese and ducks. Bald Eagles also roost along its
shores. Dress warmly and bring a lunch for this all-day trip. Meet at the
Massabesic Audubon Center parking lot at 9:00 a.m.
Field Trip : Plum Island
Saturday, April 15
Join Hank Chary (437-2552) for a not-so-taxing day of birding at the
Parker River National Wildlife Refuge. One can always expect to see a lot
at this regional hot spot. Meet at the Park and Ride at Exit 4, I-93 in
Londonderry at 0800. Bring a lunch for this all-day trip. There is a
$5.00 per car entrance fee (or bring a current duck stamp or Golden
Eagle pass). Note, dogs are not permitted in the refuge.
Field Trip: Bird Walks at the Massabesic Audubon Center
Saturdays, April-September, including May 6, 13, 20, 27, June 3, 10, 17, 24,
plus Sunday, May 21, 7:00-9:30 a.m.
Join an Amoskeag Chapter volunteer trip leader for a morning bird walk
through the meadows, woods, and lakeshore habitats of the Massabesic Audubon
Center. Meet in the parking lot. Contact: the Center at 668-2045.
Field Trip: Saint Anselm College Campus
Saturday, May 6, 7:00 a.m.
Join us for a beautiful hike and half-day of birding on 350 acres of the
Saint Anselm College campus. The unique diversity of habitats here yields a
variety of species in the spring. Hiking is along well-groomed trails, but
there may (will) be some wet spots. Hopefully the black flies won't be too
bad, but you might want to bring some repellent. Meet at the Dana Center
parking lot at Saint Anselm College, Goffstown. Contact: Dr. Jay Pitocchelli
at 774-4931.
Field Trip: Beginner's Birding at Hackett Hill
Sunday, May 14, 6:30 a.m.
Everyone is welcome to join this 2-3 hour field trip as we look for spring
migrants. In past years, we have found Scarlet Tanagers, Eastern Towhees,
and Rough-winged Swallows, to name a few. Meet at the parking lot at the
University of New Hampshire campus on Hackett Hill Road in Manchester (off
Route 3-A). Contact: Jane Hills at 625-8332.
Field Trip: Plum Island
Saturday May 27, 6:00 a.m.
Join us for a springtime pilgrimage to this popular Massachusetts birding
spot. This trip should yield many species of migrating songbirds as they
head north toward their breeding grounds. Meet at the Massabesic Audubon
Center parking lot and bring a lunch for this all-day trip. There is a $5.00
per car entrance fee (or a current duck stamp or Golden Eagle pass).
Contact: John Munier at 437-7402.
Field Trip: Musquash Conservation Area
Saturday May 20, 6:00 a.m.
The wide variety of habitat within Londonderry's Musquash Conservation Area
supports abundant bird and mammal life. We will explore a small portion of
the uplands and wetlands within this large protected area (nearly 600
acres). There is always some mud in the Musquash, so wear appropriate foot
gear. This field trip is during ASNH's Birdathon/Bloomathon weekend, so
perhaps you can line up some sponsors to help support New Hampshire's
wildlife. Meet at the Park and Ride at Exit 4, I-93, in Londonderry at 6:00
a.m. or at the Hickory Hill entrance to the Musquash at about 6:15 a.m. The
trip will last about 4 hours. Contact: Hank Chary at 437-2552.
