BIOLOGY OVERVIEW
Welcome to the Biology Department Homepage! The Biology Department
is housed in the Goulet Science
Center on the campus of St.
Anselm College in Manchester, NH, and currently consists
of 10 faculty and 7 staff members. The Department administers four
majors: Biochemistry, Biology,
Environmental Science,
and Natural Science. Our
diverse curriculum is specifically designed to allow students
to:
1) Explore the fundamental characteristics of life from
the molecular to the ecosystem level.
2) Critically evaluate biological information through application of
the scientific method.
3) Interpret biological information in the context of modern evolutionary theory.
In addition to traditional lecture sessions, students in the
department have diverse opportunities to learn outside of the
classroom. Laboratories play an integral part in the
curriculum, and hands-on learning is emphasized in most
courses offered in the department (e.g., biochemical
experimentation, outdoor ecological studies, dissections of
representative animals). Students are further encouraged
to undertake a research project
with a faculty member of their choice during their senior
year. Projects completed in recent years range from
studies of cancer biochemistry to the analysis of vocalization
patterns in wood turtles. Additionally, education
outside of the college is available through internships
arranged with various outside organizations (e.g., ??????).
Our ultimate goal as a department is to produce
students who are well-rounded in the sciences and who are
well-prepared to pursue careers or post-graduate study in
biology or the health sciences.
