Welcome to the Biology Department!
The Biology Department is housed in the Goulet Science Center on the campus of St. Anselm College in Manchester, NH, and currently consists of 11 faculty and 6 staff members.  The Department administers four majors: Biochemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, and Natural Science. In this webpage we hope to highlight some of the benefits of a Biology education at Saint Anselm.

A Diverse Curriculum:
The Biology Department offers a wide variety of courses covering the entire breadth of the field of Biology. In addition to providing a solid foundation of knowledge, these courses provide strong preparation for students wishing to pursue employment or an advanced degree in the biological or health sciences. Courses offered beyond the introductory level include:

Biochemistry
Biochemistry of Cancer
Genetics
Cell Biology
Microbiology
Pharmacology
Nutrition
Biotechnology
Endocrinology
Developmental Biology
Animal Physiology
Human Anatomy & Physiology
Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy
Invertebrate Zoology
Ornithology
Animal Behavior
Aquatic Ecology
Ecology
Evolutionary Biology
Conservation Biology
Environmental Biology of Plants
Biosphere at Risk
Tropical Biology in Belize

The effectiveness of our curriculum in providing a broad base of biological knowledge is evidenced by the fact that the average score of our seniors (Class of 2008) on the ETS-Biology Major Field Test was in the top 15% nationally (out of 255 schools).

For more information on courses offered in the Biology Department, please visit the Biology Courses page.

Hands on Learning:
Learning in the Biology Department extends beyond traditional lecture sessions. Laboratories play an integral part in the curriculum, and hands-on learning is emphasized in most courses (e.g., biochemical experimentation in the lab, outdoor ecological studies, anatomical dissections). Furthermore, students are encouraged to undertake a research project with a faculty member of their choice. Projects completed in recent years include studies of: cancer biochemistry, vocalization patterns in wood turtles, octopus behavior, and population dynamics of endangered plant species. Additionally, education outside of the college is available through internships arranged with various outside organizations (recent examples include the Bedford Animal Hospital, New England Medical Center, and New Hampshire State Forensics Laboratory). For more information about hands-on learning in Biology, please visit our Biology Research and Biology Internships pages.

A Dedicated and Experienced Faculty:
The Biology Department currently consists of 11 faculty members, each with a unique background and area of expertise. Our faculty believe strongly in direct interaction with students, and many of our students develop lasting relationships with faculty that last well beyond the four years spent at the college. This close link between students and faculty is one of the distinct advantages of an education at a small, liberal arts college like Saint Anselm. For more information on our faculty, please visit our Biology Faculty page.

A Proven Track Record of Success:
Students graduating from the Biology Department at Saint Anselm College have successfully pursued careers or advanced study in nearly every field of Biology.  For those interested in the health sciences, we have a proven track record of successfully training students for Medical School, Dental School, Physician’s Assistant, Pharmacy, and Nursing programs (among others).  For those interested in biological research and teaching, we have had many students pursue graduate degrees with a goal of working for biotechnology companies, for government agencies, or in the academic environment.

Our success in preparing future scientists, teachers, and health-care workers is evidenced by the fact that current seniors and recent graduates have already been accepted to or are currently enrolled in the following sampling of programs of advanced study:
