Biochemistry Program

Program Director: Prof. Robert C. Vallari

~ The Biochemistry program is an interdisciplinary major which draws upon the resources of the departments of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The curriculum is designed for students who wish to explore the phenomena of life through the use of biomedical instrumentation and techniques.

~ The Biochemistry program focuses on life processes at the molecular level, with emphasis on the chemistry of cellular systems in simple and complex organisms. The curriculum is designed for students seeking preparation for graduate studies, for training in the health-care professions, or for entry-level positions in science-related industries.

~ Students majoring in Biochemistry work closely in consultation with a faculty advisor to design the student's course schedule to insure that the requirements for the program are met. This schedule must include the following required courses:

In addition, a laboratory research project is an obligatory component of the Biochemistry program, and is required during the senior year of studies. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of this program, students may elect to take their research through the Biology Department in Independent Research (BI 21-22), or through the Chemistry Department in Research and Seminar (CH 50).

~ Following the sophomore year, a student may investigate a field of personal interest by the selection of elective courses from among the following:

Other courses offered by the Department to Biology or Chemistry majors may also be chosen to fill elective slots with the approval of the department chairperson.
