Environmental Science Program

Classes of 2002, 2003, 2004

~ Students in the class of 2002, 2003, or 2004, and majoring in Environmental Science, work closely in consultation with a faculty advisor to design the student's course schedule to insure that the requirements for the program are met. This schedule must include five (5) Basic Science courses, five (5) Environmental Core courses, and five (5) Focus Electives. These courses are as follows:

Basic Science Courses Core Environmental Courses Focus Electives

~ Each student will choose five focus electives from a wide range of potential courses included in the biological, physical, and social sciences, as well as mathematics. Two focus electives must be biology courses: one at the molecular level and one at the organismal level. Choices should reflect individual interests and/or career or graduate school goals.

Research Experience

~ Since scientific research is an important aspect of an education in science, each major, under the direction of a faculty member, participates in two semesters of Directed Studies and Research (BI 21) within the Biology Department, during the senior year. Students must choose a topic and a faculty sponsor by the second semester of the junior year. Research topics may involve laboratory studies, field work, or internships (in the physical, biological, or social sciences) and must address an environmental problem concern, or policy. Students are encouraged to gain additional field or laboratory experience through the department's internship program.
