St. Anselm Research Interests and Background

-My original research was an attempt to detect nerve cell activity in cell culture preparations using a light emitting chemical probe (lucigenin) and photon counting equipment. Active oxygen is an expected byproduct of the metabolism of neurons. After treatment of a neuron culture with lucigenin, the detectable photon output may be interpreted as the level of mitochondrial activity and, thus, cellular excitement. See a summary of my work from the Gordon Research Conference.  Another project was the isolation of a potential fluorescent probe (stain) for mitochondrial activity from the bioluminescent mushroom, Panellus stipticus.

Current Research Interests

-I am currently involved in the TBI ReFocus project producing a computer portal for individuals with brain injury, stroke or otherwise limited ability. Please visit our web site for more information.

Directed Studies Projects with Former Students

-Students were involved in the preparation and maintenance of mouse brain cell cultures and the preparation of solutions. They also learned the design and application of the research protocols and data interpretation. The work of other research groups with similar objectives were read and discussed.
