BLADDER BALL BLUES
While this palaestra scene does not actually appear in Graves' novel or any of the ancient sources, it does serve to dramatize some of the narrative's description of Tiberius and Drusus. On pages 42-3 of Graves novel we find brief summations of Tiberius (his appearance, his social awkwardness, his success as a general) and of Drusus (his personal skills, his military accomplishments and philosophy of discipline). Tiberius' disgust with his marriage to Julia is mentioned on p. 41. The episode would leave its viewers with the impression that Tiberius was rotting away in Rome for the past ten years, when in fact he was away on military campaigns as often as he was at home (see Graves p.72, Velleius, Dio and Suetonius).
