This scene is pretty much scripted by the Graves' novel where Tiberius happens to be with Augustus and Livia when the courier arrives. Pulman inserts the Augustus brow-beating session as a neat transition from the preceding scene, but then relies on Graves for the rest (including dialogue). This letter incident seems to have its basis in Suetonius. Curiously, Suetonius does not see Tiberius as an innocent forced to read his brother's letter. In fact, Suetonius includes this incident as evidence for Tiberius' hatred of his brother, implying that he purposely set up Drusus by bringing the letter to Augustus' attention. |
