Musicians, Play us Out
This scene is a transitional theme piece ala Pulman. We see Tiberius looking at a drunken Julia with disgust, see Graves p72ff, Suetonius (Tib 7 & 10) and Dio 55.9. Drusus' memory is invoked by Augustus. His words reflect sentiments found in Suetonius (Cl 1) and included by Graves (p.51). Although everyone seems toasted at this dinner, it does not seem to be a celebration of the anniversary of Drusus' death. Augustus' chiding of Antonia is interesting. Romans respected the choice of a woman to remain univira (being the wife of only one man). But Augustus' reforms (Lex Iulia c.13BC) gave women only a year vacatio before they were penalized for not marrying. The lex Papia Poppaea (AD9) rewarded free-born Romans for having three children (ius trium liberorum). Antonia, who already had three children never remarried.
