| This scene is pure Pulman. Some of the details of Augustus' itinerary : Corsican pirate problems, his dislike of sea travel, etc. are culled from Graves. But in the Graves novel it is after the fact that Livia does her interrogating. Marcia, wife of Fabius Maximus, is her target. Livia expertly wheedles info out of her by pretending to know more than she actually does. Pulman, looking to economize roles no doubt, excludes Marcia and changes the focus to Augustus and then to Livilla. His Livia isn't looking for confirmation of Augustus' travel plans, she already knows. The question she wants answered is who told on her. The cat and mouse game with Augustus reveals little but that he is on to her, the beating of Livilla reveals the source. |
