SUDDENLY, I DON'T FEEL SO WELL
Pulman seems to take two pages from Graves and freely expand them to fit his dramatic scheme. In Graves, Augustus' illness begins near Naples on his trip to see Tiberius off to Illyricum. Pulman for some reason (more screen time for Brian Blessed?) has Augustus fall ill, then recover, then fall fatally ill. Suetonius mentions an intermittent stomach bout, but gives no details. Dio only mentions his last illness. Tacitus, pointing the finger at Livia mentions increased imfirmities.
While Graves does have Livia take Tiberius into her confidence regarding Augustus and the succession, Tiberius' temper tantrum is a Pulman invention. Livia's advice to a departing Tiberius- don't go to far too fast- is taken from Graves.
