Pulman does take some dramatic license with his material. Most of the sources have Augustus travelling South to see Tiberius off to Illyricum, then spending some time at his villa on Capri- indulging in every? form of fun with his ephebic cohors. After more revelry at Naples, he sets out for Rome. It is on his return when he falls seriously ill. Much of this is condensed into one scene, setting the action at Nola for ease of dramatization. All of the sources agree that Augustus fell seriously ill near Nola. What is glaringly missing is the purpose for Augustus' trip- seeing Tiberius off to his province.
