ARE YOU FABIUS MAXIMUS?
Pulman pulls no punches in this little gem of a scene. Are you Fabius Maximus? Yes, what's the message? Die- well something like that. Graves, however, develops Fabius' death to the max. Tacitus is only his source. In Tacitus, Fabius' Postumus connection is revealed to Livia by his wife Marcia. Soon after Fabius dies mysteriously, some even suspect suicide. His death takes place before that of Augustus. Graves, holding to chronology, embellishes this a tad. His Fabius is waylaid in the street one night on his way to the palace and stabbed in twelve places by masked assassins- suicide? Oh and Graves has Livia put out the hit. One small quibble with this scene- why would a man as important as Fabius Maximus be answering his own door?
