Livia & Tiberius' day off
Livia and Tiberius play hooky from the funeral. Graves devotes an entire sentence to their pseudo-grief. Interestingly, Tacitus supplies us with juicier details. He speculates that it wasn't the dignity thing keeping them inside, but fear that their faces would reveal their joy. He also observes that Antonia's name is curiously absent from the funeral attendence list. While admitting that illness and/or intense grief may have kept her from her favorite son's obsequies, Tacitus offers an even more sinister explanation: Livia and Tiberius locked her up in the palace as a cover for their own truancy.
