Sejanus kindly informs Claudius that his wife is pregnant. Claudius knows that the baby can't be his since he hasn't spoken with his wife for quite a while. Sejanus suggests that Claudius divorce his wife and marry his sister. Sejanus says: "She's independent, she'll leave you alone."
SWEEEEEEEET! Just the way Claudius liked 'em. Actually, the ancient sources say that Claudius really liked the women -- a lot. Indeed, Suetonius remarks that Claudius did not have any inclination toward men. Was Claudius a homophobe, or was it Suetonius?
No one really knows if the betrothal truly happened, but Sejanus' sister may have been the one described in Suetonius whom Claudius divorced.
WHATEVER, Jack Pulman. Did we need an entire scene devoted to this? It was an odd way of showing Claudius' stupid mistakes, but Pulman made it seem that Claudius was just a nice guy. Why didn't he choose to display the draining of the Fucine Lake? An ancient version of Boston's Big Dig: it lasted eleven years! Later in the episode, Claudius is shown to be clever by going along with all of this.
