- NAME: Velleius Paterculus
- DATES : 19 BC - AD 31?
- CONSULTED WORK : Roman History - Book One- fragmentary; Book Two-146 BC -AD 29
- GENRE : (summary) history
- LANGUAGE : Latin
- STYLE : He summarizes large periods of Roman history, digresses on various tangential topics and focuses much attention on emperors and events in his own lifetime. He very much interjects his own opinions into the narrative. Book Two ends with a series of rhetorical questions praising Tiberius and Livia .
- RELIABILITY QUOTIENT : Suspect
Although at first glance Velleius would seem the perfect source- he was a contemporary of Tiberius and served under him, it is for his treatment of Tiberius and his circle that most scholars write him off as an unreliable sycophant (suck-up). He does, however, provide us with a rare pro-Tiberian view of events. He even sticks up for Sejanus!
