19

It is not about violence, nor murder, nor poison,
But the accusation is for me about three she-goats:
I complain that these goats are absent by the theft of a neighbor.
This judge demands that this be proven for himself:
You cry out Cannae and the Mithridatic war,
And the false oaths of Carthaginian rage,
And Sullas and Mariuses and Muciuses
With a great voice and entire hand gesture.
Now, Postumus, speak about the three she-goats. .

EPIGRAM VI.19

SUMMARY
Martial’s three she-goats have been stolen by a neighbor. In this case, Martial bids Postumus, an apparent patron (Jones, 1935) and lawyer, to prove to the judge that his neighbor stole the goats. To the disdain of Martial, all Postumus seems to talk about are people and events in Rome’s history infamous for the bloodshed they caused. As horrible as all of these ‘crimes’ were, Martial is really only interested in being compensated for his missing goats. In Roman law, the defendant would usually receive twice the value of the stolen property if he won the case (Encyclopaedia Brittanica, 2009).
