EPIGRAM VI.46

SUMMARY
This short two line epigram is illuminated through an understanding of chariot-racing, especially during Martial’s time. It seems strange that the horses are lashed and yet they do not hasten which means that rider has control over them and the outcome of the race. The outcome of the race therefore seems somewhat political, as the rider would strive not to win, there must be some benefit in it for him. The team colors and assosciaitons allude to this as well, see commentary on the word "veneti". In praising Catianus's control, Martial seems a bit sarcastic and negative about his deceitful and clever manner.
