LVI.

Do you think that you cheat your reputation, Charidemus,

Because your legs are stiff with bristles and your chest with shaggy hair?

Trust me, root out hair from your whole body

and attest that you depilate your buttocks.

“What reason is there?” you ask. You know that many men say many things:

make sure that they think you, Charidemus, are sodomized.

EPIGRAM VI.56

SUMMARY
The epigram is curious because Martial tells Charidemus that people are speaking about him but does not give the specifics as to what they are saying. This may suggest that Charidemus already knows what people are saying about him. This seems to present the reader with an akward social situation where a person seemingly refuses to accept common knowledge about themselves and instead of accepting and changing it because it disturbs others, simply thinks it will go away. Martial then tells him that he should pretend to commit sodomy and groom his body in a homosexual manner.
