You are sad and fortunate. Beware that Fortune may know this:

she will call you ungrateful, Lupus, if she knew.

EPIGRAM VI.79

SUMMARY
This short epigram displays Fortune’s apparent concern for human emotion and gratefulness. Fortune deals out human destiny and was believed to have had control over people’s lives. It is what “governs everything and overturns or preserves it.”(Watson, 2003). Fortune is personified in this epigram, which is seen in countless epigrams by Martial. Lupus is clearly not happy with the good fortune he has been dealt. As usual, Martial is full of criticism for a man who is not happy with his life.
