Discussion

Although the study found significance, the study could be improved upon. A larger sample size would increase the power of significance. A more diverse, heterogeneous population, unlike the sample used in the study, would also increase the generalizability of the study. A more valid survey of Instant Messenger and a more in depth loneliness scale could also enhance the study. The order of how the measures are presented could assist in improving the study. The time of year the study is presented could affect whether loneliness is
higher or lower, and if a baseline of loneliness pre-college could be measure, the study could greatly advance.
The implications of this study can be seen in the health and business fields. If people who use Instant Messenger in excessive amounts especially at night when they should be ending their day or sleep are becoming lonelier, this loneliness can be related with health risks, like loss of sleep, disordered sleeping habits, etc. Often feelings of loneliness also lead to deeper psychological problems such as depression and social anxiety. Social isolation and compulsive use may also be health factors related to excessive Instant Messenger Use. For the business field, effects of Instant Messenger can be positive, especially if the business is a provider of an Instant Messenger service. With increased use, and increased loneliness leading to even more increased use, businesses are making more money whether they provide the service or they have advertisements that are part of service. On the other hand, if businesses allow their employees to have access to Instant Messenger, employees may use Instant Messenger instead of doing their work, which leads to less productivity.
The positive implication of this study can be seen in a number of areas. If parents are attentive to the possible negative effects of increased Instant Messenger use, then parents can encourage their children
to spend less time on Instant Messenger and more time in group social situations, such as sports, clubs and volunteer work. Also, if people are aware of the effects they may pay closer attention to how much Instant
Messenger they use and how they are mentally feeling. This awareness could possibly cut down on the number of negative health related effects of Instant Messenger.
