This is a guide to selected sources of information related to "New Hampshire Writers" in the Geisel Library. It is meant as a starting point for your research. For further research assistance, please take advantage of the reference services available to you in the Geisel Library. Stop by the Reference Desk in person or online at Ask a Librarian.
The reference librarians have created a group of Web pages named Research Help and a tutorial called Searchpath to help teach you the basics of library research and to introduce you to Geisel Library. On the Research Help pages, you will find a guide on Research Basics and a helpful guide on evaluating Web resources titled, Judging What You Find. Please take advantage of these resources.
Reference books are shelved by Library of Congress call number in the reference stacks near the reference desk. They may not be checked out, but photocopiers are available on the lower level of the Library. Online reference sources can be found in the library catalog, or listed on Reference E-Resources.

Literature Resource Center
This database combines three literary databases for biographical information, bibliographic listings of authors' works, plot summaries, and literary criticism for 90,000 novelists, poets, essayists, journalists and other writers. This resource also provides the full text of articles from more than 100 literary journals and has links to author's official web sites. Literature Resource Center includes the following databases:

Use the *(asterisk) as a truncation symbol to retrieve variant forms of a word root. Use the Boolean OR to expand your search by including synonyms and related terms. When using two different Boolean commands in the same search statement ("and" and "or" in the preceding examples) you must include parentheses to indicate which command is to be performed first.

While searching the catalog, you may come across books that are located in the "New England Collection," which is housed in the Hanlon-Poisson Room on the Upper Level. This collection includes rare old volumes such as histories of New England towns and original writings of 19th-century New England residents. Ask a librarian at the Circulation Desk to grant you access to this room and unlock the book cases. These materials must be used within the library.
If you want to find additional materials beyond the Geisel Library collection, search libraries worldwide using WorldCat. You can search the same Subject Headings and keywords that you utilized in our catalog.

Find biographical information on authors, as well as bibliographies, plot summaries, and literary criticism of their works. This resource also provides the full text of articles from more than 100 literary journals.

Early American Newspapers, 1690–1876
This text-searchable database has cover-to-cover reproductions of hundreds of historic American newspapers, including 37 from New Hampshire.
JSTOR
Geisel Library subscribes to two JSTOR collections: Arts & Sciences I and II. These are large collections of the full text of back issues of major journals in the humanities and social sciences. SocINDEX
This sociology database provides full-text articles from journals, books, monographs, and conference papers. Coverage is of all subdisciplines of sociology, including criminal justice, ethnic and racial studies, gender studies, social psychology, urban studies, and more.
Union Leader
Full-text articles published in the Union Leader from 1989 to present (Lexis-Nexis). Within 3 days of publication; Saturday and Sunday editions usually within 72-96 hours after publication.
American Transcendentalism Web (Virginia Commonwealth)
This site provides an excellent overview of transcendentalism and literature, including the writers who worked within this movement, the themes and ideas they explored, and literary criticism of their works.
Books About New Hampshire (NH State Library)
A bibliography of books about the state, organized by a Table of Contents into categories such as History, Legends and Folklore, Personal Views, and Politics and Government. Some of these will be in our collection, while others would need to be requested via Interlibrary Loan using the form available on the front page of the Geisel Library website.
Modern American Poetry (Univ. of Illinois)
This academic, collaboratively-developed website provides analysis and commentary on over 150 poets and their works, including Robert Frost and Maxine Kumin. Some of the analyses are unique to the website, but most were originally published in scholarly journals or books.
