Introduction

This is a guide to selected sources of information related to children's literature in Geisel Library. It is meant as a starting point for your research. For further research assistance, please take advantage of the reference services available to you in the Library. Stop by the reference desk in person or online at Ask a Librarian.
Research Basics

The reference librarians have created a group of Web pages named Research Help, and a tutorial called Searchpath, designed to help teach you the basics of library research and to introduce you to Geisel Library. Reference Sources for Background Information

Reference books are shelved by Library of Congress call number in the reference stacks near the reference desk. They may not be checked out, but photocopiers are available on the lower level of the Library. Online reference sources can be found in the library catalog, or listed on Reference E-Resources.

Find background information, keywords, biographies, and bibliographies.

Oxford English Dictionary (OED)
The OED is a comprehensive dictionary of English. It gives detailed word histories, variants, and examples.

Literature Resource Center
Find biographical information on authors, as well as bibliographies, plot summaries, and literary criticism of their works. This resource also provides the full text of articles from more than 100 literary journals.

MasterFILE Premier
Similar to the Readers' Guide to Periodical Literature, "this multidisciplinary database provides full text for nearly 1,950 general reference publications with full text information dating as far back as 1975. Arts & Humanities Citation Index
Provides indexing to the world's leading arts and humanities journals and selections from social science and science journals. Includes articles, bibliographies, editorials, letters, and reviews. (1980 - present)

JSTOR
Geisel Library subscribes to three JSTOR collections: Arts & Sciences I and II and Biological Sciences. These are large collections of the full text of back issues of major journals in the humanities and social sciences, including Annual Review of Sociology, Nineteenth-Century Literature, Philosophical Quarterly, and the Quarterly Journal of Economics. Coverage is generally from the beginning of publication to within 5 years of the current issue.

Includes 655 of the fables, with index and searching option.

Folklore and Mythology Electronic Texts
Arranged by title of story, collection, or subject of tale, with links to fulltext.

Tales of Wonder: Folk and Fairy Tales from Around the World
Stories arranged by country. Site has not been updated since 1997, although many links are still functional.

19th Century German Stories
Includes stories like Hoffman's and the Grimm brothers' tales.

Project Gutenberg
Begun in 1971, this the Internet's oldest producer of free electronic books, and with over 6,000 online books is among the largest, and is expanding at the rate of about one new book per day. Project Gutenberg's text-only and easily downloadable files are among the most carefully scanned and proof-read digital texts available.
