This is a guide to selected sources of information related to "Non-Western Portraits of Human Greatness" in the Geisel Library. It is meant as a starting point for your research. For further research assistance, please take advantage of the reference services available to you in the Geisel Library. Stop by the Reference Desk in person or online at Ask a Librarian.
The reference librarians have created a group of Web pages named Research Help, and a tutorial called Searchpath, designed to help teach you the basics of library research and to introduce you to Geisel Library. On the Research Help pages, you will find a guide on Research Basics and a helpful guide about evaluating your Web sources, Judging What You Find. Please take advantage of these resources.
Reference books are shelved by Library of Congress call number in the reference stacks near the reference desk. They may not be checked out, but photocopiers are available on the lower level of the Library. Online reference sources can be found in the library catalog, or listed on Reference E-Resources.
Oxford Reference Online – The Place to Start
Contains electronic versions of commonly used Oxford dictionaries, encyclopedias and subject reference works.
New Dictionary of the History of Ideas
This is a unique resource that offers cross-cultural and interdisciplinary insight into the ideas that have shaped humanity and history. Encyclopaedia Britannica Online
Find overviews on a wide variety of topics by searching this online encyclopedia. Besides the search feature, there is also a helpful subject browse, timeline browse, and online atlas. Try the Workspace feature to create a customized page for a research project.
Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy
More than 2,000 articles from the Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy are now available online, making this an excellent source of background information for research in philosophy and related fields. Use the *(asterisk) as a truncation symbol to retrieve variant forms of a word root. Use the Boolean OR to expand your search by including synonyms and related terms. When using two different Boolean commands in the same search statement ("and" and "or" in the preceding examples) you must include parentheses to indicate which command is to be performed first.

Arts & Humanities Citation Index (AHSearch)
This index provides citations to more than 1,300 arts and humanities journals, which include articles, bibliographies, editorials, letters, and reviews. Note the cited references feature, which may enhance your search. (1980-current)
ATLA Religion Database
This database is an essential resource for research in theology and humanities, and covers all religious traditions, though the strongest coverage is for materials dealing with the Judeo-Christian tradition. It provides citations and some full-text articles on topics such as biblical studies, world religions, church history, and religion in social issues. (1949-current)
Contemporary Women's Issues
The focus here is women's health and human rights issues in over 150 countries. This database provides full-text articles and citations from books, journals, newsletters, and research reports from non-profit groups and government and international agencies.

Philosopher's Index
The premier international resource in philosophy, this database contains over 160,000 citations with abstracts to journal articles as well as books. The advanced search allows you to limit your results to English-language text or to journal articles only. (1940-current) Journal List User Guide
Project MUSE
This database offers all full-text articles from over 300 peer-reviewed journals; subjects include humanities, arts, medicine, mathematics, social sciences, and more. (See Journal List for dates of coverage.)
PsycINFO
Search for titles and summaries of articles (from more than 1,700 journals), chapters, books, dissertations, and technical reports, all in the field of psychology. This is also a good source of information about the psychological aspects of related disciplines such as medicine, psychiatry, physiology, pharmacology, sociology, education, nursing, linguistics, anthropology, business, and law. PubMed
PubMed is database of biomedical citations and abstracts that includes Medline (see above). Use this database to search for citations to articles that aren't in Medline because they're outside of that database's scope-for example, citations to general science and general chemistry journals. It also contains some citations that aren't in Medline: current citations not yet added and older citations. In some cases, this database also provides links to full-text articles and will also provide links to citations to related articles. Further information on PubMed and Medline.
Religious and Theological Abstracts
Search here for citations and summaries of articles appearing in scholarly religion and theology journals from around the world-Christian, Jewish, and other world religions are covered. Abstracts have been classified as Biblical, Theological, Historical, and Practical. (1958-current)
Worldwide Political Science Abstracts
Search this database for citations and abstracts from literature in political science and its related fields, including international relations, law, and public administration / policy. Coverage includes books, dissertations, international journals, and book and software reviews. One special feature of this database is linked reference citing: references cited in the bibliography of the source article accompany the citations that have been added to the database since 2001, and for all journals added since 2004.
