Find Books

For additional books on the subject, please search the library catalog. Search by keyword or search statements:

state government*
state* and (law* or legislat* or regulat*)

Here is a selected list of books found by using one or more of the above search statements.

A database named WorldCatwill give you access to even more book materials. In fact, it comprises all the books cataloged by all the libraries in all the world! Borrowing materials via Interlibrary Loan is a very easy process when using WorldCat. Ask for assistance at the reference desk if needed.

Find Journal Articles

The following indexes and databases will enable you to access scholarly readings in issues affecting state policy. While most of these databases point to journal articles, some also cite books , book chapters, conference proceedings, dissertations, etc. Use key phrases such as:

environmental policies and (state regulat* or massachusetts)
mtbe and new hampshire and (policy or policies or regulat*)
adoption and law* and massachusetts

Please note: an asterisk (*) is a commonly used symbol in most databases. Used at the end of a word stem, it provides for all variants on the word stem. (e.g. regulat* retrieves regulatory and regulations).

Major Indexes

Academic Search Premier
A good place to start for general readings. Many are full text.

LexisNexis Academic
Great for regional news. Select 'U.S. News' and then region desired (eg. 'Northeast') from the drop-down boxes. And you may want to change other defaults such as period of coverage. (The truncation symbol is this database is an exclamation point (!) rather than an asterisk (*).

NationalJournal.com
Performing a site search on some important state topics will bring up news and commentary.

SocINDEX
Over 300 scholarly articles having the phrase 'state policy' or 'state policies' or 'state government*' in the title of the article. Many of them are available full-text or are housed in the library's print journal collection on the lower level.

Westlaw Campus
Use this full-text database for substantive readings from law reviews and also to access case law and state statutes in full-text.

Worldwide Political Science Abstracts
A comprehensive political science database that will supply citations and abstracts to scholarly articles pertaining to state issues.
