Running Lists in III by call number

How to use Create Lists for books falling in the following call number ranges: Boolean Searches Using Call Numbers (from the III Release 2000 Manual)

Libraries that use more than one call number indexing scheme must use special formatting when performing boolean searches for call numbers in the "Create Lists" function.  Examples of the different kinds of call number indexing schemes that may be in use at your library include Library of Congress (LC), Dewey, NLM, and SUDOCS.

If your library uses only one call number indexing scheme (e.g., LC or Dewey, but not both) the "Create Lists" function will automatically determine which scheme the library has, and will perform call number searches accordingly.  When the "Create Lists" function is used on a system with more than one indexing scheme, however, it formats the search keyed as though the indexing of call numbers was "character-by-character".  This means that call numbers will not be retrieved unless the search that you enter is formatted in the same way that the call numbers are stored in the index.  For example, the call number "HG65.G62", indexed using Library of Congress formatting rules, is actually stored as:

hg   65 g62 (i.e., hg<space><space><space>65<space>g62)

If your library uses more than one indexing scheme, you can still perform call number searches successfully, but you must key the call numbers so they match the way they are stored in the index, rather than matching the way they appear in the call number field.  In this case, the "Create Lists" function will search for the call numbers character-by-character; thus, if spacing is not included in the search that is keyed, the call numbers will not be found.  In a character-by-character search, the three numbers in our example above occur in the following order:

hg 1
hg 100
hg 65

Therefore, in this case a search for call numbers between "hg 1" and "hg 100" would NOT find "hg 65".  To search for the LC call number "HG65.G62" at a library using more than one indexing scheme, include the spaces when keying the search:

Present search range: b100000x to b199742x
Find BIBLIOGRAPHIC records that satisfy the following conditions
    CALL # between  hg    1 & hg  100

Note that the spaces have been entered in the call numbers:

hg<space><space><space><space>1   and
hg<space><space>100

If you are unsure as to how a particular call number field is indexed on your system, use the INNOPAC search program to do a call number search that retieves a browse screen. The format of the call number as it is displayed in the browse screen is how the field is actually indexed.
