This guide will direct you to print and electronic resources for education related research. If you are a student teacher and would like information on lesson plans and curriculum development please consult our Student Teacher Guide.

With over 1 million abstracts to journal articles and government reports, ERIC is the premier resource for locating research in the field of education. Search by keyword or by ERIC's thesaurus of subject headings to locate articles and documents of interest.
Academic Search Premier
Academic Search Premier indexes articles from a wide range of disciplines including the social sciences, humanities, and the hard sciences. You can use Academic Search Premier to locate research on the practice and study of education as well as the history, philosophy, and/or theory of education.
Find Journal Articles in Related Fields
America: History and Life
Use America: History and Life to locate research on the history of education. Highlights of this database include: History of Education Quarterly, History Teacher, American Journal of Education, and the Journal of Social History.
Philosopher's Index
Use Philosopher's Index to locate research on the philosophy, theory, and ethics of education. As the premier international resource in philosophy, this database contains over 160,000 citations with abstracts to journal articles as well as books. User Guide (PDF)
Project MUSE
Project MUSE provides full text access to more than 200 journals in the arts and humanities, social sciences, and hard sciences. As an interdisciplinary database you will be able to pull up research on the subject of education from a variety of different disciplines. Titles of interest to the study of education include: Brookings Papers on Educational Policy, Education and Culture, The High School Journal, and Education and Treatment of Children.
PsycINFO (User Guide) and PsycARTICLES (User Guide)
Use PsycINFO and PsycARTICLES to locate articles on education, child development, and learning from a psychological perspective. PsycARTICLES is a full text database while PsycINFO is an abstract only database, meaning that you will need to use WebBridge to locate the full text.
SocINDEX
Use SocINDEX to research how education affects society and conversely, how society affects education. In addition to containing articles from an academic sociological approach, SocINDEX also contains articles on education from a social work practitioner perspective. Search the database by keyword or subject heading to locate abstracts and/or the full text to articles.

If you searched the Geisel Library Catalog but could not locate a book on your topic try searching WorldCat, a database that allows you to search the collections of libraries throughout the United States. If you find a book that you want you can request it through interlibrary loan (ILL) by clicking on the ILL icon in the book's catalog record.

Searching the World Wide Web can yield a vast amount of information, but in terms of quality and reliability, your results may be uneven at best. The ease and speed with which individuals can publish information on the web, regardless of accuracy or quality makes it imperative that when doing research on the web you know how to evaluate the information you find. General Education Sites
Educator's Reference Desk
The Educator's Reference Desk is broken up into 3 sections: Resource Guides, Lesson Plans, and Question Archives. The Lesson Plans section allows you to search through lesson plans on a number of subjects including: language arts, science, social studies, and foreign language. The Resource Guides and Question Archives sections point you in the direction of web resources and journal articles on a variety of research topics including: evaluation, educational technology, and family life, among others.
Education World
Education World is a comprehensive website for educators with news, website reviews, and a search engine for education related materials on the web. The website also contains lesson plans, articles, and information on using technology in the classroom.
Data, Statistics, and Analysis
Annie E. Casey Foundation
The Annie E. Casey Foundation performs extensive research on the state of the child in the United States. Much of the research focuses on social or community initiatives and their role in improving child development. Of particular note is their Kids Count series. They also have an extensive section on education research namely in the areas of child development, school readiness, and policy reform. Click on the Knowledge Center link to view their reports.
Center on Education Policy
The Center on Education Policy's (CEP) research focuses on the U.S. public school system. Topics of research include assessment, testing, school violence, funding, and numerous public policy issues that affect the nation's public school system.
Child Trends
Research available at Child Trends deals with public policy program evaluation, child welfare, child poverty, and the role of the family in school readiness and cognitive development. Make sure to examine their Child Trends Databank which combines statistical data with narrative analysis.
National Center for Education Statistics
The National Center for Education Statistics, a division of the U.S. Department of Education, is responsible for gathering and disseminating education related statistics and analysis. Research is available on topics as diverse as crime in the nation's schools to early childhood development to the assessment of the nation's public school system. Take time to thoroughly search this website, there is a tremendous amount of information on it but it can, at times, be difficult to navigate.
National Institute for Early Education Research
Hosted by the Rutgers Graduate School of Education, the National Institute for Early Education Research (NIEER) deals specifically with the education of children aged 3–4 years. Topics with available research and data include program assessment, special education issues, English language learning, and early childhood cognitive development, welfare, and school readiness. Of great value is their State of Preschool annual publication which reports on access to, and quality of, preschool education by state.
New Hampshire Department of Education
This official web site of the New Hampshire state government has information on New Hampshire schools, curriculum, finance, credentialing, reports and statistics, assessment, and more.
RAND Corporation – Education Research Area
Topics included in RAND Corporation research reports are wide ranging, including children and adolescent mental health concerns, the effect of No Child Left Behind on teacher and school performance, and the assessment of charter schools, among others.
U.S. Department of Education
As the U.S. governmental agency dedicated to the study of education in the United States, the U.S. Department of Education's website makes available a wealth of research, reports, analysis, and statistics to practitioners and education researchers. Also of note are their publications and listings of education related grant opportunities.

Books
Geisel Library has a number of print resources that can assist in researching special education issues. To locate books, journals, and reference materials on special education do a keyword search in Geisel's online library catalog.
Examples of possible keyword searches include:

inclusion AND education
exceptional children OR exceptional students
learning disab* (use the * for truncation, it will bring up the root of the word with variant endings, in this example the database will look for disability, disabled, etc.)

Council for Exceptional Children
"The Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) is the largest international professional organization dedicated to improving educational outcomes for individuals with exceptionalities, students with disabilities, and/or the gifted." Because the CEC is a professional organization they have a tremendous amount of information for the practicing educator to utilize. Pay particular attention to the News & Issues, Policy & Advocacy, and Professional Development pages.
LD Online
An "interactive guide to learning disabilities for parents, teachers, and children." The Especially for Educators section contains teaching techniques and an information bank with articles, research findings, and news.
School Psychology Resources Online
This website contains information on specific conditions, disorders, and disabilities, as well as information on the development and behavior of youth.
