Organize Your Citations with EndNote

Keeping all your references organized and creating "works cited" lists for your papers can be a real challenge. Fortunately, these are the exact tasks in which the software program EndNote specializes. The college recently purchased a campus-wide license for EndNote, meaning that any interested student or professor can get a free copy from the IT help desk.

EndNote helps you import citations from library databases, create bibliographies in the style of your choosing (MLA, APA, and many others), and even insert citations into your Microsoft Word documents as you type. Faculty as well as students with senior theses on the horizon may want to get acquainted with EndNote, since it can be a significant time-saver. For help with getting started and using the basic features, see our User's Guide to EndNote on the library website.

Explore Two New Online History Encyclopedias

Geisel Library has just added two award-winning history encyclopedias to its Oxford Reference Online collection. First is the Encyclopedia of the Enlightenment, which covers important concepts, philosophical movements, and historical figures from the era of the Enlightenment, which spanned from 1670 to 1815. Although the focus is on the Enlightenment period in western Europe, the encyclopedia also gives attention to Enlightenment-related developments in other cultures.

Second is the Encyclopedia of the Middle Ages, developed by an international team of over 600 scholars. This important reference work on the medieval world explores all aspects of the period from the fifth to the fifteenth century, including art, language, law, science, philosophy and theology. It primarily concentrates on cultural, social, political, and religious developments in Europe and the Christian world.

Important: New Way to Access ILL Articles

In the past, journal articles that you requested through Interlibrary Loan were emailed to your Anselm account as attachments. Thanks to an upgrade, you will now receive an email indicating that your article is available to access online. Click on the link in the email message, and when you reach the Ariel screen, enter your Anselm email address and college ID number (including the S in uppercase). You will be presented with a list of all your requested articles that have arrived via ILL, which you can then view and print.

One great benefit of this new system is that you can access all your ILL articles in a single location, rather than scrolling through your Inbox trying to find each one. To do this, go to the Interlibrary Loan homepage and use the Access My Recent ILL Articles link. Please be aware that due to copyright issues and constraints on our Ariel server, you will only be able to access articles for 60 days after receiving them. As a result, we recommend either saving the article to your computer or printing it when it arrives.

Watch our WebBridge Video Tutorial
Do you see the WebBridge icon when searching our online journal databases but have no idea what it means? Then watch Geisel Library's WebBridge video tutorial. In less than 4 minutes you will have a solid understanding of what WebBridge is and how to use it. The tutorial requires Flash and contains audio so make sure you have your headphones.

The WebBridge video tutorial is the first in a series of future tutorials created with the newly licensed screen capture software program Captivate. In contrast to text based tutorials, video tutorials contain animated screen images of the database being demonstrated. Audio accompanies the images, ensuring that viewers learn exactly how to use the resource.

The video tutorials bring a new dimension to Geisel Library's information literacy services; through these tutorials viewers will be able to learn about library services and resources in an engaging and interactive manner. We welcome any questions or comments about this or any future video tutorials.

Access Nearly 450 New Online Journals
It's been clear that our faculty and students appreciate the convenience of being able to access scholarly journals online. We're excited to announce that we have purchased online access to a package of nearly 450 journals produced by Sage, one of the biggest names in academic publishing. These journals cover a wide range of disciplines, and include many of the top-cited journals in certain fields. Examples include Clinical Nursing Research, Crime and Delinquency, European History Quarterly, Human Relations, Journal of Applied Behavioral Science, and the Journal of Peace Research. This package gives us access to current issues as well as previous issues back through 1999.

You can access full-text articles in these journals from any of our research databases. If you come across a post-1998 article from a Sage journal, click the    button to be linked into its full text on the Sage website. You can also browse through issues of a Sage journal by typing its name into Journal Finder, following the "Sage Complete A–Z List" link, and clicking on "Select an Issue from the Archive" (note: despite what the website may say, no login is necessary). To learn more about this package, view the complete list of Sage journals now available to the Saint Anselm community.

Check Out Our Redesigned Computer Area
During the winter break, we rearranged the computer area on the main level in order to create a new space for group study and laptop use. There are now four large tables available for group work, each with power outlets nearby to make it easy to plug in your notebook computers. The area is also ringed by cushioned chairs, many of which are also near outlets. We hope this will be a comfortable and convenient place to work from your laptops or study with classmates. If you need help connecting your laptop to the network or our printers, please ask at the Reference Desk.

We've also moved all the main level printing to a central location between the desktop PC area and the new group study space. Finally, we've added three new PCs to the lower level, so if you can't find a free computer on the main floor, be sure to check downstairs. We'd welcome comments or feedback about any of these changes.

Locate student teaching materials
Students working toward their teaching certification now have an excellent resource to help them prepare for their student teaching experience: the Curriculum Resource Center (CRC). New to Geisel Library this semester, the CRC contains numerous teaching aids that students can use to create and supplement lesson plans and assignments for math, science, and social studies courses.

Browse the CRC by subject area and then by sub-topic to search through PDF versions of handouts, timelines, experiments, activities, and other instructional materials. Whether you need ideas for algebra word problems, a chronology of the United States Civil War or a handout detailing amino acids and proteins, the Curriculum Resource Center is the place to go.

For any assistance in using this database please contact Gwen Verkuilen or Ask a Librarian.

Find Quick Answers at Your Fingertips
Need a currency conversion chart to carry with you on your next trip overseas? Want a quick translation of a foreign phrase in the journal article you’re reading? Can't figure out what a particular acronym stands for? These and other answers can be found on our newly revised Fingertip Facts page. Previously known as "Quick Reference", the new page is more streamlined, offering direct access to the kind of quick information which might be needed at one’s fingertips.

In addition to acronym, currency, and translation tools, you can also find links to the best online dictionaries, people finders, quotation websites, and weather forecasts. Bookmark this page for whenever you need a quick bit of information. You can also find it on the Research Help page (under "How to Find") or the Faculty Resources page (under "Online Resources"), both on the library website.

Learn How to Use WebBridge
By now you've probably noticed the WebBridge button showing up in our research databases, but maybe you're not sure what it's for or how to use it. Basically, WebBridge makes it easier for you to get ahold of the articles or other items that you find in the course of your search. Every time you click on the WebBridge button next to an item in your search results, you'll see the three ways of getting the item.

First, if the item is available in another full-text database, you'll see a link right to it under the "Full Text Resources" heading.

Second, if the item is possibly available in our library, you'll see a catalog link under the "Geisel Library Materials" heading. If it's a book, follow the link to verify that we have it, and write down the call number. If it's an article, look at the catalog record's "LIB. HAS" field to make sure we have the volume or year of the article you want. Print out the article's citation info from the database, then head to the Lower Level to find the article. Ask at the Periodicals Desk if you need help.

Third, you'll always see a link for requesting the item through Interlibrary Loan. But only use this if the item is not available in full-text or in our library. WebBridge fills in the item's info, so all you need to do is type your full name and barcode ID number and submit the request. Interlibrary loan is very fast: books will arrive in about 7–8 days, and articles are emailed to you in PDF within about 4–5 days. Be sure to place ILL requests well in advance of your assignment due dates.

Please contact Jeff Waller if you have any questions, or get more info from our WebBridge user's guide.

Get One-on-One Research Help
Having trouble finding all the information you need for a big paper or presentation? Consider making an appointment with a reference librarian. It's easy to set up—simply fill out our online form and we'll contact you as soon as possible.

We have librarians specializing in every area of study, so you'll get expert advice on how to search for books, articles, primary sources, statistics, and anything else you need. These meetings can last up to an hour if needed. Just give us at least 48 hours notice so we can have some resources ready for you. Whether you're still developing your topic or just looking for one or two more sources to cap things off, we can give you the help you need.

Search Citations in the Web of Science  (Note: trial has expired)
We've arranged a month-long trial subscription (until November 15) to the powerful Web of Science database. It provides searchable article citations from nearly 9,300 academic journals, which have been handpicked for being the most highly cited by scholars. But more importantly, you can click on the cited references of every article to trace through the origins of particular ideas, or quickly find all the subsequent articles that have cited a particular work. This database is especially strong in the sciences, but it covers the best journals in all disciplines.

Several faculty and students have asked about getting access to this database, so please take advantage of this window of opportunity. It's a great way to dig into the scholarly research on narrowly-defined topics or to check out how many times your articles have been cited (whether for promotion and tenure reasons or simply for personal satisfaction!). Make sure you click on the Access the New Version button at top to work with the new interface, which is easier to use than the classic version.

If you have any feedback or questions about how to use this database, please email
Jeff Waller.

Test New Business & Language Databases  (Note: trials have expired)
We're currently testing two databases for possible purchase, and we'd welcome your input on them. First is the Business and Company Resource Center, which is a one-stop shop for information on companies and industries. From detailed profiles to investment reports produced by heavy hitters such as Bear Stearns, you can find the latest info on US and international companies. You can also read news releases as well as full-text articles from business journals to get insight into recent trends.

Second is Oxford Language Dictionaries Online, which starts with bilingual dictionaries in French, German and Spanish, but builds in lots of additional features. Get tips on grammar and usage, click through verb conjugation tables, and measure your progress by taking vocabulary quizzes or playing grammar games. By early 2008, Oxford plans to add dictionaries for Chinese and Russian, as well as a pronunciation module enabling you to hear how words are said.

Please email Jeff Waller with any comments or feedback on these trials, which run through the end of October.

Read 200 Years of the London Times
Reading old newspapers can provide a fascinating glance into the culture and attitudes of the past. But even more importantly for scholars, they serve as primary documents that bear witness to historic events as they unfold. With a full archive of the New York Times already under our belt, the library has now purchased a searchable 200-year online archive of the Times of London. Every last page has been scanned, meaning you can find not only articles and editorials but also photos, obituaries, and even advertisements (if you're curious about the "latest" fashions and styles). However, be aware that Sunday editions are not included in the archive.

This archive has already come in handy for several students. One student read about the preparations for the wedding between Prince Charles and Lady Diana to learn about the trappings of a "royal ceremony," while another investigated the British media’s perspective on the decision to use the atomic bomb in Japan. If you're studying history or European literature, take a look at this database and see what interesting insights you can dig up.
